Hahah
I like your thinking !
I'll paint mine red and have a Redtop, should easily add 20kW of vroom vroom fun just with paint
A GTi M AMG troll
Can't remember who, but they told me the Silvertop was better to turbo charge. Not sure why, so thought someone might know what makes it so special.

Re: Turbo charging a TD42 engine
Ha ha yes every extta horse helps
I have done quite a bit of reading on this topic and the engines we have here is really a mix and match. The real silver top had 28mm gudgion pins, ours have 30mm. But ours have the pistin coolers again that was also in the silver top.
We also have some wngines with the vacuum pump on the alternator and some on the engine.
No one knows what is what any more

Re: Turbo charging a TD42 engine
Dustin, I would write down all I know on the black top vs silver top, but it would take ages.....
Have a look at this here.... pretty much covers it. But in a nutshell, it seems the GU TD42 motors we got were a bit of a mix of bits and pieces of both. whereas the GQ or Y60 model TD42 that managed to get into SA were the pure silver top.

Re: Turbo charging a TD42 engine
Found a possible solution to the turbo TD42 conundrum.
Found a scrap yard in Newcastle that has a 4.2Td Patrol bakkie that rolled.
Body is pretty poked, but engine bay is miraculously untouched.
If I strip off all the stock turbo components and build them onto a stock TD42 motor (when I find a Patrol ) it should theoretically all be fine.
Then the troll will make lots of chooo chooo noises and plenty happiness for me
I'll post the advert in the Marketplace section for anyone who wants parts.
List and costs :
Air box - R1710
Turbo manifold - R2850
Turbo - R8550
All piping between air box, turbo, intercooler and intake - R1700
Top mount intercooler - R3990
Complete injector pump with factory boost compensator - R11400
TOTAL - R30 200
Only problem is the okes at the scrap yard are smooth cats from Chatsworth that want to mek joo one shweet deal ma cuzzie. He knows one solid connection and all.
I don't really trust guys that smooth and from so far away.
Just an option I guess.
Maybe I'll just take the pump and air box and after I find a troll, I'll buy a turbo. Let's see how I can swing this one passed SWAMBO

Re: Turbo charging a TD42 engine
Hmmm.... is it the TD42Ti motor?
If so, then as far as I know there is an ECU controlling the turbo and EGR.
I would phone Frans Fourie ( Tour de Frans ) and ask him for some input.
List and costs :
Air box - R1710 - sounds fair.... en all ma cuzzie, but make a better deal
Turbo manifold - R2850 ... hey man, also make a better deal, ma cuzzie
Turbo - R8550 ... this is a bit crazy in my opinion ( it may be a variable vane turbo, which is more expensive than a normal turbo, but still this price is more than a new turbo.... a lot more !!!) and these turbos fronm what I hear aren't exacly the best turbos power wise for the job of delivering what an average power lust would want.
All piping between air box, turbo, intercooler and intake - R1700 ..... sounds fair.... en all ma cuzzie, but make a better deal
Top mount intercooler - R3990.... These are very small IC's in my opinion, and also about the same as new prices. Fitting a bigger IC will also cause the turbo to have to work harder to deliver the air at boost.... refer back to the turbo comments above
Complete injector pump with factory boost compensator - R11400 .... Hmmmm not sure about that price..... sounds a bit steep in my opinion

Re: Turbo charging a TD42 engine
Ah ha... I forgot about the new engines being common rail.
I agree the turbo price is pretty steep.
Thought I could could just bolt off & bolt on, but like Tinus says, it won't go.

Re: Turbo charging a TD42 engine
Dustin, the TD42 never had a common rail version
The factory pump also never had a boost compensator (as far as my knowledge), but rather a altitude compensator (which is useless) so that price is a bit steep because it will cost another 7k - 8k to get the pump reconditioned and modded to have a boost compensator.
Then 4k for a cooler is way too much, you can get a bigger and better top mount cooler new for cheaper than that
Turbo isn't bad, but again you can buy a brand new better suited turbo for thr TD42 for less than 6k.
Then on the ECU, this I am not sure exactly what it controls, but ist defiantly not the fueling nor the turbo as they all have normal waste gate turbo's.
I think it mainly works the EGR system and adjusts the pump timing only.......not the fueling as it is still a mechanical pump and they do not have a MAF. This is why the pump is too expensive as that system is not great and I have the diesel shops make the pumps 100% manual again.....just works better

For the sake of answering the question on how to turbo charge the TD42 for anyone new who is looking, here's how I did it.
