Fanus - This is the simple solution I was talking about and am taking off now. Double stainless steel braided wire inside the shrink tubing. Not theft proof but a deterent and you would need the right cutting tool with you to get through.

Your mags are different to the ones I had on so please measure from the fixing bolt on yours around the spoke of the mag and back to the fixing bolt. I think this one may not be long enough but I can modify for you quite easily.

As I've mentioned, I just use a padlock. I tie it up with cable ties so that it does not rock around. It doesn't look perfect, but it's covered by the spare wheel cover in any case.

I put it through one of the rim's stud holes, and through a hole in the backplate. Not sure if you spare weel carrier on the back door has the same holes. Probably not perfect, but it works for me.

In my photo, you'll also notice the original "locking" wheel stud. This appears to have been ground off by the previous owner, as it does not work...

Finally, I know - the rim looks a little bad. This was, however, the rim which I had on the back right of the 'trol when I had the run in with the Corolla a few weeks ago. As such, whilst everything looks fine (it's just got a coating of rubber from the other guy's tyres and a bit of red elsewhere from his vehicle) I'd prefer to have it checked out before using it day to day. In the meantime, I've organised another rim, which I'll get next week Friday. Once that happens, I can take this rim in to be assessed / have repaired. This may mean that there is a spare 4.5 GRX rim available at some point. Alternatively, I'm going to keep it as a second spare for a trip we're sort of planning into Northern Namibia next year.

Ian - My and Fanus's spare wheel carriers do not have a hole in the middle so can't do the padlock through thing. I think it may be another mod the previous owner made to yours as I have not seen others with the hole in the middle.

Strange. There are several holes in the backplate of my spare wheel mount. They all look factory though - unless someone made them very, very neatly. I will have a look at my father's when I see him again.

Look at the photo of mine above with wheel removed. If you want my carrier just shout. I think yours will collect water and the door will eventually rust unless it has drainage at the bottom.

My 4.8 GL also has the hole and I used a discuss lock, Can only use the discuss lock a with a steel wheel , on a mag you will need a normal padlock. I also cable tie and normally stick a piece of insulation tape over the key hole

Thanks - but mine won't collect water. It's open on the sides and the bottom. Will post pics at some point when I take the wheel off - just to clarify.

I must check what the wheel carrier on my father's 4.5 looks like (ie: if it looks like yours or mine), as it seems as if there are a number of very small (and subtle) differences between Patrols circa 98/99 and 00/01.

My sparewheel carrier looks the same as Ian's and I was also going to put a padlock though it as Ian has done but was not sure how to secure it without it banging on the rim. I was thinking of a piece of conduit inside the rim hole but the cable ties seem a better idea.
