Re: 4.2TDI Gearbox Should i worry
The 4.2 diesels do have a rumble when at low revs and one accelerates..... even slightly. This apparently is the springs on the clutch plate that rattle in their "casing" probably due to the bang of the 6 cylinders at a "high" torque. The "rattle" goes away as soon as the revs and the resonance of those springs balance out and the motor runs at a smooth rev ( old school 6 cylinder diesels are not known for their smoothness, unlike a petrol 6 cylinder )
If it is the clutch making the noise, then all is good for many many km still. Thrust bearing on the other hand is a different story.....

Re: 4.2TDI Gearbox Should i worry
Just to add onto what I said above...... This happens mostly when in low range when the torque is even higher vs the load on the gearbox.

Re: 4.2TDI Gearbox Should i worry
The gearbox rumble from a TD42 is well known and attributed to "harmonic resonance", even more pronounce when using the Nissan Genuine HD clutch kit (As Pete said) , which is 5 spring ? i think. I have posted a fair bit of info on this forum about this phenomenon. But in Short,.. its only audible when the vehicle is under little-to-No load at low RPM, (as Cedric said). And it dissipates once rev's and/ or Load increase (ie: 1300 RPM onwards as an example). Its also mostly audible only in 1st and 2nd gears.
However,.. this Harmonic resonance is not something that is audible, nor related, to gearbox/clutch noise at standstill,ie: when clutch is either depressed, or released, ...which is the case here. So i dont believe this to be the same issue at hand.
If the vehicle is at Standstill, and there is audible noise / vibration when clutch is operated, then it must be something else...
Thrust bearing / Release bearing ? I'm no expert on clutch's, just contributing what i have experienced.

Re: 4.2TDI Gearbox Should i worry
A release bearing only rotates when the clutch pedal is depressed and the release bearing makes contact with the fingers on the pressure plate, hence therefor if there is a noise when vehicle is idling
but goes away ones the clutch is pressed in ,its not the release bearing or the clutchplate, the clutch plate is now stationery as is the complete gearbox ,all has been disconnected from engine.thats
the function of a clutch assembly

Re: 4.2TDI Gearbox Should i worry
Evening All
Thank you all for your valued inputs, i am certainly surprised about the response on this site, great stuff.
Unfortunately i did not take a picture of the piece of metal, about the size of two match stick heads.
No noticeable noise from inside the van with all windows closed when clutch depressed, no vibrations.
No noticeable noise from inside the van with all windows closed when driving low and high speeds through all the gears.
Slight noise from inside the van with all windows closed when driving 4 x 4 low and high range through all gears in thick sand.
The noise has not increased since i have bought the van
I will go for a desert drive this week end and concentrate on listening more finely, maybe with windows open?
I can live with the noise, just a bit concerned about the piece of metal found that this may be a part of a bearing........

Re: 4.2TDI Gearbox Should i worry [FEEDBACK]
Went on a two desert trip the weekend, went through all the gears no noise, Micheal from Pretoria was here today with his Patrol, his patrol does exactly the same, so i have decided that i will put this to bed and ride the van until it gives problems, that's to say if it will, about the piece of metal????????????
