1996 Patrol GQ 4.2 SGL Petrol - low kms (Photos added)
Hi All
I am itching to buy a used GRX 4.8, but to make this really feasible, it means I need to sell my GQ.
I believe this one has the lowest kms in SA - just under 90 000 at the moment. I bought it with 58 000 in 2012, so cannot really vouch for the kms with the previous owner, but the last 30 000 has full km logs, so that I am sure of. The previous owner owned the car from new, her husband died, and it was then not used a lot. She showed me logs that time, so the kms may be true. I used it only over weekends and for holidays.
The specs:-
- standard suspension and tyres.
- standard 7 seater setup.
- Weber 38 DGAS carburettor conversion. I bought it with this, and had the car tuned once at Kosie Swanepoel. The water choke was converted to a manual choke, and this works ok. Nice low down torque - pulls easily away in 2nd gear. No starvation observed on 4x4 routes. Fuel consumption 15.5 l/ 100km on open road if cruising at 120, and up to 20 l/100 km in traffic. I can show you my fuel logs.
- free flow exhaust system.
- 140 l stainless steel long range tank, fitted just after I bought it.
- cruise control:- Rostra - see http://www.rostra.com. I imported it, fitted it (was huge fun to sort this out), and it works really well.
- it had an ugly double din radio / tape deck in, so I replaced it with a modern double din JVC radio, cd/dvd, with mp3, bluetooth, etc, and new speakers all round.
- it had a temperamental alarm system fitted when bought, so that was removed after it stranded me one morning. It just has a gear lock now. I believe this is much better for a vehicle travelling in remote parts - no aftermarket electronics that can interfere!
- I had fitted a Pertronix electronic ignition to it once - a very cute gadget that replaces the points, and it worked beautifully, made the engine smoother, but it only lasted 6 weeks... Luckily, I had the points with me, when it failed ,that I simply reinstalled, and there she went again. But this is the magic of this car - the only bit of electronics in it, is the radio. Everything else is plain simple mechanics, that any person with basic mechanical skills can attend to.
Things that need attention:-
- 2 chips on the windscreen.
- a small tear in the vinyl on right rear door inside windowsill - the previous owner's dog, apparently...
- the fuel cap lock was damaged by a thief who wanted to steal my fuel. It still works fine, though (and the 140 l tank was nearly empty, so the bastard got nothing...)
- a few minor dents and scratches, that one can expect from a car nearly 20 years old.
Other things:-
- color:- dark grey.
- the rear diff lock works fine.
- the 4wd with lockable front hubs still perfect.
- seats still perfect.
- dash still perfect - the dash is really good quality and will last a lifetime.
Price:- R80 000 negotiable. (reduced from 90k - I think my price was too high)

Hi Graham
You are welcome!
Yes, normally Bettys Bay over weekends, and in Somerset West in the week - I work at the University of Stellenbosch. The Patrol currently does most of its work on the coastal road over weekends.
Corne
Btw - here is the fuel log also attached.

By Corne's description this is one very clean, original , well looked after , unmolested Patrol.
Corne,.. the fact that you give such detail on all things i find very cool. Although i already own a Patrol,.. i hope someone from the forum buys this from you as it seems a really good vehicle, and hopefully kept within the forum users.
This is my favourite colour GQ of all time. Cant understand why Nissan stopped using this colour... very close to the newer Land cruiser charcoal colour.

Thank you Russ - I have read quite a few of your posts with your Patrol pickup!
Yes - I also hope that this can be kept in the Patrol4x4 family - that is why I am advertising here first, before going to sites such as autotrader and gumtree. (And I will surely depend on the connections here, when I hopefully buy that 4.8!)

Dit lyk baie goed en hy het seker 'n manual ratkas en nie 'n automatic ratkas nie.

I am quite keen on Christo Smit's very nice 4.8... So I have reduced the price on my GQ even further - see my original updated post at tne top. Goodness, one buy a lot of 4x4 for very little money when you buy a GQ!
