Water proof car cover
Hi all.
Have to leave my Patrol outside in the elements when I go to the UK for several months and want to get a cover for it. Not been able to find something suitable so am asking the forum for their experience and advice on what and where to get it it from. I also have heard that one should not leave a vehicle on grass as this promotes rust!!!! Is this true? I live in Hibberdene on the coast so rust is a huge factor.
Looking forward to your replies
Kind regards.
Barry

Re: Water proof car cover
Yeah I agree...... Drive your new Patrol up to JHB then park it in my garage, and I'll drive it every second day to keep the battery charged...

Re: Water proof car cover
Just a thought: Gazebo sells for 1000 or so [Makro / Game] and some 80% shade netting on the sides .. that should last a year or so.
AND you can use it for camping etc when tou're back..
Wat gat jy vir so lank by die Ingilse doen ?

Re: Water proof car cover
Thanks Peter and oom Mac. The Gazebo idea is a good one, but I have spoken to my brother in law and he is going to make room in his shed for me to keep it there. Peter, if I put a cover on it will it will it start to rot even if its under shelter, or should I just leave it uncovered?

Re: Water proof car cover
Barry down at the coast you need to worry about salt and moisture. ...when it stays dry your chances of rust and rotting is less.... to me letting it breath makes more sence....just give it a good coat of polish to prevent oxidation and invest in a couple of cans of silicone spray for the under carrage...keep moisture and oxygen away and you will be cool

Re: Water proof car cover
I agree with Tinus. I think allowing air movement is the best, and a good polish is the best to do.
This is a bit of a messy job, but the guys in Mocambique paint or spray diesel on the undercarriage of the cars there. At Builders Warehouse one can get a 5L pump action spray bottle. fill with diesel and put the car on ramps or on a nice axle twister, climb underneath with a condom over your whole body ( so you don't come out eventually looking like a diesel soaked rag .....haha ), and spray EVERYTHING all the way underneath. It doesn't need to be a heavy coat of spray/diesel, just enough to leave a nice oil coating everywhere without excess dripping. leave it outside for a day to let all the drips fall off and not on your brother in laws shed floor. Alternatively, get the cheap plastic spot sheets from Builders, lay on the shed floor and park the Patrol on top.
When you are back most of the diesel will have dried up. So drive to a carwash place that does chassis wash and Bob's ya cousins dog. Or if the diesel smell is not too bad, leave it as is and drive to your hearts content

Re: Water proof car cover
Many thanks for the good advice Tinus and Cedric. I have ramps and plastic sheets, now just to convince my brother in law that he wants to do it for me.
