Roof Rack lashing

Post by vanhack »

So I have the roof rack for around 5 months now. Used about 3 times for camping trips.

I am using 2 ratchet straps, some elastic cords, and a elastic net to hold my camping gear down. The ratchets are ok, as when wrapping around stuff if the slack is not tight then the stuff still rattles. The elastic bunjy is ok for smaller stuff, but takes time to put on and off. The net is good, but takes time to unwrap etc

Any tips on what you do in SA that is a good tip?

Hi Sid.

It depends what camping stuff you are carrying on the roof rack. I have bolted down 2x plastic ammo boxes onto the rack and added a strap across both just to secure them. I have seen overlanders with various size lockable steel trunks bolted down to carry stuff in. However, we here in SA have to keep all stealable things inside our trucks and hope for the best, so I cannot leave any thing of importance on the roof. The truth is, I have never seen an overlander with a net, everything is secured.

I am sure you will get very good advice from this site.

Regards.

Hi Barry,
you are right. We don't have an issue with theft here at all, one of the luxuries of the middle East.....not many but just one of them.

Hi Sidarth .. you too quiet from the deep desert .. I thought you gone camel ridin' into the big yonder :-)

Oom mac again .. Me thinks -- place a photo picture of your roof rack loaded as you norally load -- without the trap & netting
Then I [we] can make suggestions
[you are bound to get a lot of those .. no two persons see packing and tie down quite the same . :oldtimer: :oldtimer: :oldtimer:

Yeah been busy, just had 1 camping trip last month. It was cold that night, but loads of firewood made it pleasant.

I have another camping trip with friends this weekend, so I will take some pics and post up.
