So who has one of these old IC's laying about that they want to "dump" I think a 2.7TD Sani would run very lekker with one of them strapped over the top.
Most the guys mention something that worries me, the oil leak from the IC means that is very dirty and well coated with oil. Oil has horrible thermal qualities and will rob performance immediately. Who cleans there IC's regularly and how often do you do it.

If its so soiled with oil it means excesive oil is either coming from the breather or the turbo, check this while you're busy with the cooler. I had a turbo blow on a 2.7 jeep a few years back and had the IC redone at silverton. There is also a company in jhb that specialises in cooling, they custom build and recore radiators and IC's.

Hi All,
I am about to do the IC upgrade, have found most of the parts, but need some advice about the MAP / Boost sensor which is built into the OEM IC. Does anyone have some information on what to do about this? I cannot get hold of Driko.

Hi Bruce,
I had a look last night and the boost sensor is just bolted to the Inter-cooler, you can remove and re-use it. The only parts you'll need is a pipe and a fitting (to be fitted to the inlet manifold)
Something like this:

I met with Driko yesterday, all under control, will attempt the project this weekend...
Undecided on whether to do the Dawes valve too, but this can be added later..

Ek gaan ook maar my opinie gee oor die top mount vs front mount intercoolers
Ek is maar n voorstaander van die front mount cooler, dit het nou wel sy negatiewe eienskappe soos die turbo lag maar op n 4.2 diesel gaan jy nie drag strip toe nie en om eerlik te wees...... die lag is nie eers merkbaar as ek op die highway is nie.
Die voordeel van die front mount cooler vir my is dat ek n baie groter cooler kan op sit as wat mens onder die bonnet kan in kry.
Tweedens verkoel hy BAIE beter op die oop pad en dit is wat ek wil he....veral op n warm dag as jy dalk iets sleep of swaar gelaai is.
Ek sal graag na die dyno tune my EGT wil vergelyk met die ander manne sin...
Hier is n foto van hoe myne uit gedraai het, dis n baie groot cooler wat nie almal sal goed keur nie, maar ek dink hy is perfek!!

I agree with you, the top mount is a bit of a pain when it comes to heat soak. this is VERY evident in slow driving and even though mine has been ceramic coated there is still a lot of heat soak that takes place. The fan underneath does help keep the IC cooler, but one cannot get away from it compared to a front mount IC. However..... the piping from the front mount IC runs very close to the exhaust manifold and the viscous fan generally will move the hot air from the radiator over these pipes. I would recommend insulating these pipes as much as possible too as the nice cool air will be warmed up from the steel piping leading from the IC to the turbo and from the turbo to the inlet manifold. The rear of ANY motor ( Firewall side) is the hottest area.
The IC I have on my TD42 is a big bugger, bigger than I've seen on other 4.2's, and I think on the highway the IC's on both top and front are probably ( IMO ) operating on a similar efficiency as the cool outside air passes over the bonnet into the IC scoop...... this is as long as you don't have a bullbar with the round tube bit running over the front of your bonnet to mess up this airflow. That's why my Iron Maiden has the extended scoop and fan fitted

I agree Cedric, the heat soak is really a problem plus a full engine bay doesn't help either. I have tried to keep my engine bay as "original" as possible meaning I don't have an extra battery or any of that installed yet. This is just my opinion, but I think the less you have going on inside your engine bay the better the hot air can get out of there... I also agree that on the open road I think there will be very little difference between the top mount and front mount coolers.
I will do some proper testing once my dyno is done. For testing purposes I would like to install a air temp sensor on the last rubber section on the intake manifold just to see what the actual intake air temp is. I can actually just unscrew my EGT and install it there just for testing. I would like to do a comparison between normal town driving, highway driving and maybe some highway driving while towing something.
