GQ diesel (TD42) pre & post '93?

Post by marakasmalan »

Good day folks!

Anybody aware of this info, quoted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Patrol ?

In August 1993 the TD42 was lightened in order to reduce fuel consumption and make it rev harder. This also had the side effect of weakening the engine. The original engine can be identified by its silver rocker cover, whereas the lightened engine featured a black rocker cover.

In 1995 another little known change to the TD42 was the removal of an oil line that squirted oil onto the piston crown, cooling the piston crown from its underside. This makes pre-1993 engines more suitable for aftermarket turbochargers as they featured heavier internals and oil squirters.

This might be incorrect, cause when I redid my motor ( 1999 TD42) I remember nearly forgetting to refit the squirter nozzles on the underside of the block to shoot oil on the underside of the pistons.

Yip.... as the ace of spades.... .... I'm pretty sure its the original block too. But hey, I may be wrong.... the registration papers don't say anything, and I've spoken to all the previous owners and they didn't mention anything.

The other way to tell if its a black or silver top is that the silver top has the vacuum pump on the back of the alternator where as all the other TD42 don't

For very little money you can convert your block to have piston coolers! Most effort is to strip it down. :mytwocents:

Its a groove you cut at the top of the conrod bearing housing. You face it upwards. Two things happen.
The oil bleed faster out from the bigend bearing, witch the bearing wil get cooler and fresh oil faster.
The grooves facing up help the oil channel through up the bore and cool the piston and lubricate the bore.
Works like a charm. Not the same as the proper thing thou. If you look carefully at the proper jet. It face to the piston into a hole, the piston then has channels inside it to cool and lube the oil rings.
My one work just as fine. Never had a bearing failure when this was done to a engine...
