New Zealanders in SA

Post by Smalles »

Hi Everyone

We are three couples from New Zealand who wish to visit the Southern African countries over the next two or three years. Our plan is to purchase three 4x4's, vehicle of choice is a Nissan Patrol 4,2 diesel 1995- 2001 and do visits of up 4 - 5 months at a time. We plan to arrive in May/June 2014. We would welcome any contacts, information and info on any planned vehicle sales around the time of our arrival.
The group is made up a 2 Brit/Kiwis, 2 Kiwi/Kiwis, 1 Swiss/Kiwi and 1 SA/Swiss/Kiwi.
Lots of offshore sailing experience, fishing, hiking, tennis and IT and mechanical experience in the group. No problem to bake our own bread and the ladies are pretty good at supervising the occasional tyre change.
The SA/Swiss/Kiwi has worked in Kruger so a limited amount of African bush knowledge and how to make a smokey fire is also available.

Looking forward to your input

Hay is this the great migration in reverse??? Kiwis coming to SA :rolling:
To be honest the 4.2 deisel are like hens teeth out here in SA the chances of finding 1 never mind 3 when you need them are slim! Why don't you look at the petrol models??

I have to agree with Ian. Your alternative is the Toyota Land Cruiser naturally aspirated 4,2 diesel. But frankly, for the amount of diesel they use and given their resale costs, a petrol Patrol would probably be the better option.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

It will be better to acquire the cars as they become available and get someone to store them for you. We can have a look out for you, but the websites to look at is:

www.autotrader.co.za
www.gumtree.co.za
www.olx.co.za
www.carfind.co.za

As mentioned these vehicles are very scares in SA. Have a look in Botswana and maybe Zambia also. The price might be better there. You can also still bay a new 4.2D station wagon in Mozambique. There are forum members that will go and have a look for you at the cars if you identify some you are interested in in SA. Graham in Gauteng (Path Maker)and Frans (Tour de Frans) in Cape Town are two mechanics that will have a look at the cars for you to identify problems. I know Graham will do this for you for free. Frans will also probably, but I can not speak for him.

Good luck.

Lets not ruin this new found friendship with Rugby!

I know of one '98 model 4.2 with aftermarket turbo.
It has done about 200,000 since the aftermakret turbo, and have been to Botswana and Malawi and back on seperate trips, no prolems.
So the installation has proven. It will go for around 100,000 ZAR.
But these opportunities are rare.

There is another 4.2 after market (from a previsouly hand granaded 3litre) in Cape Town.
That model is more recent and will probably sell for 130,000 (current pricce tag is 158,000). And it may need some work.
Have a look here: http://www.patrol4x4.co.za/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=4198

Then there is the wonderfully kitted out 1995 model that is sort of for sale, and sort of not.
Not cheap. the seller will onyl sell if the price is right. But given what you get in terms of kit, still a good buy I think:
http://www.patrol4x4.co.za/viewtopic.php?f=65&t=4155

But for every diesel for sale, there are at least 15 petrol models on sale.
Prices on the Petrol models are good at the moment mainly due to the petrol price, and as you probably know, they tend to be quite thirsty.

Lets u know if you need advise on trips.
Members of this forum have different favourite destinations and many do repeat visits. Therefore we can offer some street-wise advice on some of the South African destinations.

Hey hey... Welcome to sunny South Africa ( when you get here )..... We look forward to having you here with us!!

Keep us posted on your route plan. There is a Nissan Off Road Club, that gets together at least once a month for an outing. If you are in the area, you are welcome to join us for a day's 4x4 trail drive, or sometimes we do weekend getaways to various places around the Gauteng ( previously known as Transvaal - Johannesburg/Pretoria area ). It would be a FANTASTIC opportunity to meet some fellow Patrol ( and even other Nissan 4x4's ) drivers..... even from the otherside of the world....ha ha. I believe we could introduce you to some fantastic Klipdrift Premium Brandy, and good SA beer too.... with loads of good banter about the rugby !!!

As for the 4.2 diesel Patrols..... yeah.... they are like finding Kiwi's here in SA..... very scarce !!! :rolling: :rolling:

The petrol may be the best value for money for what you want to do. What kind of a budget are you looking at as this can make a big difference. The guys here on the forum will assist you for sure. We are a VERY tight bunch of nutters here, with Patrol spirit like nothing you have ever seen.
Regards
Cedric
