Olifants Challenge 2009

Post by Tjaart »

What a weekend!! :dreads:.

It was a brilliant! The Patrol performed excellent, getting up and through where very few others could. Recovered a lot of stuck 4x4's, and made me proud. There was a bit more water than last year, and a couple of 4x4's drowned, blew engines, cracked chassis and sizzled their ECU's. No problems with the Patrol, however. There is really no replacement for displacement, as seen in this video.

You have to have power to help the other guys get out. Like so.

Learned new things every time. And also used the Patrol to anchor the other guys when they winched out cars that got stuck in the river bed. Some 4x4's got stuck in the deep water, because of driver error - speed, acceleration in deep water, exceeding 4x4's wading depth, and brandewyn. Other guys just took the wrong line or panicked. It happened once where the cars didn't keep a proper following distance, and bunched up in the water. Then, when they had to get out on the sand banks, they couldn't get enough momentum and ended up spinning in.

Why, when guys get stuck, do they spin until the wheels are below the sand? . I also saw another thing this weekend: People think that their vehicles ability makes up for their inability. Just because it has traction control or diff locks, doesn't means it's water proof, submersible, able to climb 60' inclines, and all of that at 3km/h? Like Andre de Villiers in his LC 70 and 3 diff locks blazing the trail at 3km/h. :blue: . It very interesting to see how each brand is represented, and fiercely it is followed. What tires are used and set ups the guys have on their vehicles.

All in all it was great. The Patrol really performed very well and made a few other guys really green and red...
