Hi All,

Many thanks for all the advice and offers of assistance. It is very much appreciated.

@ Stephaansie: No worries, no offense taken! I think you make a valid point, however I am pretty confident that the diagnosis I have been given is correct. The noise and vibration was fairly severe (i.e more than just an irritation when driving the vehicle), and on Friday my mechanic and I jacked the vehicle up and then ran it through the gears and there were a lot of unhappy sounds (rough rumbling sounds) coming from the diff. This prompted getting the current diff and gearbox specialist involved, who confirmed the suspicions of myself and my mechanic following a test drive, but subject to stripping the diff to check condition (at that stage we were all hoping that it was just carrier bearings). The current specialist does a lot of jobs for my mechanic, and I have also used him before and believe him to be trustworthy. That said I havn`t yet seen the insides of the Diff since its been taken apart, so I will make a plan to get out there tomorrow to have a look for myself.

@ Christo: Many thanks for the offer. I had always understood that the ARB unit replaced the diff carrier (think thats the correct terminology!), but that the original crown wheel and pinion were re-used in the ARB conversion. I may have that completely wrong though.....do you have a picture of the "spare parts" left over from your conversion?

Many thanks again,

Ross

Yeah...I`ll second that! Really Awesome!

As a result of Andre`s assistance (huge thank you! ), we now know that the Diff in the Gumtree ad is from a 2007, 4.8 GRX (ratio still unknown, but definitely the larger H260 diff), so unfortunately of no use to me.

The search for options continues!

Ross... try this dude.

http://patrol4x4.co.za/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=1515

Last time I saw the patrol was about a year ago, I bought the roof console and a few odds and ends from him. He may still have it.... If it is a 4.5 manual then it will probably is also a H260 diff but should be a 4.111 ratio. Maybe a complete diff transplant can be done. Someone on that post said he managed to transport whole diffs for R 800..... worth a shot

4.5 P Man 4.111 diffs and H260 rear diff

Thanks Cedrick,

I gave Wally a call, and apparently the rear diff is still available. Sine he got it without the engine and gearbox it seems 50/50 as to whether it would be a 4.111 diff or not....think the auto`s were supposed to be 3.9?

Hes going to send me some photos and then I need to do some research on how easy a swop would be if it is the right ratio. One brake caliper is missing, so I`m not sure if those are common between my 4.2D and a 4.5 or not?

ha ha ha... I know where that caliper is.... Christo.... :rolling:

If this is the case then your calipers should fit... Chuck is the same as yours and mine.... this is promising... I'm sure Christo will confirm this
