Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) conversion

Dean at Masterparts referred me to a chap by the name of Michael who can manufacture a single-mass flywheel - anyone have any ideas how this will affect the vehicle?

Replacing the dual mass flywheel with a solid flywheel will increase the level of torsional vibrations experienced by the driveline. The effect is likely to be most noticeable at low engine speeds (even at idle) where the gearbox might become a lot more noisy. I think it is something that some people will find irritating or unacceptable and others would not mind, but I doubt whether it will make a huge mechanical difference; just keep the engine speed up . You will find lots of discussions on this topic on http://www.patrol4x4.com and I am sure you will find as many that are happy with the mod as that are unhappy...

I suppose then that you may end up with the kind of vibration/harmonic resonance that many find in the TD42 after fitting the HD 5 Spring clutch (aka noise amplifier! ) This is noticeable at low RPM and disappears at around 1000 rpm , but is not noticeable at idle.

I've spoken to Michael and he does a lot of the conversions for BMW and Toyota engines.

I suppose the question is how big a Stereo can I buy with the left-over R12k?

I've changed the title of the thread to be more meaningfull as the oucome of this excercise will be the conversion from a Dual Mass to a Solid flywheel and the fitment of an appropriate clutch.

From the Aussie forum the consensus seems to be that the Nissan clutch is designed to work with a Dual Mass flywheel and as such will not be able to handle the strain caused by a Solid flywheel.

The ETA for the completion of the work is next week Wednesday with balancing on Thursday and then back to ANG for assembly, so holding thumbs for delivery week after next.

Can I also use the Castrol BOT 130 M gearbox oil recommended here?

Finally got her back today - everything seems sorted.

I'll get her into low-range over the weekend (the Patrol, not my wife ) and listen closely.

A big commendation to Michael Le Sueur from New Engineering (20 Pisces Crescent, Brackenfell 021-981-9630) who picked up the gearbox & flywheel from ANG, did the Flywheel conversion, fitted the clutch, repaired the spacer and returned it to ANG on Monday - he was great keeping me updated of progress and patiently answering all my questions.

Also to Gregory from ANG Service Centre (23 A Silverstone Road Killarney Gardens 021-556-2424)- great service at a very competitive price and commitment to excellence. They removed the gearbox (5 men) and then refitted it together with a new rear-main seal after having the rear propshaft serviced and re-balanced.

PS. According to Gregory, the next time they work on the gearbox of a Patrol, they'll remove the engine.

Hoor bietjie waar en by wie het hulle die propshaft laat service en re-balanced asb. Ek sit met n soortgelyke probleem en ry op die oomblik met n propshaft van Frans op m kar tot tyd en wyl ek myne kan uitgesorteer kry. Frans se hy kon nog nie n ou kry wat n propshaft weer 100% kan balance na n "service" of herstelwerk daaraan gedoen is nie - en selfs die een van hom wat ek mee rondry het n effense vibrasie op.

As jy vir my n naam en teefoon nommer kan kry sal ek dit baie waardeer.
