Patroliax did this after I had her fixed after the drowning. There is two electric fans that should assist with cooling at low speed or standing still did not kick in. There is a pype running from then pump to the firewall, when all is fine this pype should be cold. When the pype is hot the vents are blowing hot air. All the electrical connections where check and cleaned again and the problem was solved. There is a couple of electrical connectors to check. Facing the ptrol "Pressure sensor" left front. FAN power sources middel left and middel right and the connector on the Compressor it self. also check that all the fuses have good and clean contact.

I will post an update soon. Just got back from a month in the Kgalagadi and Botswana.
Due to the waterlogged delta roads, my ventilation controls went for a ball of chalk!
I need to check every connection and flap control due to the following happening regularly:
On start up in the morning the aircon is engaged, irrespective whether the fan is set to on or off or whether the a/c button is set to on or off.
Then later in the day when I need the aircon all the flaps are closed and NO air is blown into the vehicle and later the aircon does not engage either.
Sigh, I suspect I will have to fix Nissan's shoddy workmanship as they were the last to work on it ...
Other than that, the Patrol run beautifully, although a bit thirsty in the sand, while towing a trailer!
Will need to write a trip report soon!
Will report back once the issue has been sorted

ps: pity about the aircon/flap issue. I'm sure at the time it puts a damper on the trip, but I'm sure there were lots of things to make up for the uncomfortable times.

Update on 04 August 2010:
Patrol went to Imperial Nissan (Parow) for a service after the Botswana trip.
I asked that they have a look at the aircon / ventilation controls issue.
Received the car back on Wednesday and the problem seems to have been solved!
Here's what transpired:
1. There was a dead short behind the dashboard between the thermostat and and switch wiring. This meant that the aircon was permanently on, irrespective of whether the aircon dashboard switch was switched on or not or whether the fan was selected on or not! The result was that the aircon ran permanently and the condenser froze up, thereby blocking any airflow! I started suspecting something along this line as there would be a large puddle of water beneath the car everytime it was driven and parked in one spot for more than 10 minutes (enough time for the ice to melt).
2. The flaps now also work correctly, so I will watch this one. It seems to have a link to the electrical problem.
Early days, but it looks promising! Hope this helps anybody experiencing a similar problem.

Hi guys,
I ma quite saddened to learn that this issue of blowing hot air has not been resolved over the generations of Patrols produced since their introduction of the GU Y61's in 1997 (1998 in South Africa)
This issue has been debated over and again on the OZ forum and no fix has been found apart from a manual valve in the heater pipe (suggested earlier in this thread).
Now have owned one of the first GU I / Y61's since 1998 (TB45E) and have discussed the issue with Nissan many times.
Conclusion: The heater pipe carries hot water from the engine all the time, the controls even when closed, allow a certain amount of hot air through like a leaking valve.
Solution: Keep the Aircon on or replace the whole heater system (meaning dismantling of the entire dash board setting). Nissan would do it but at your cost.
Needless to say, that I live with this issue since 12 Years and have traveled 250'000 kms since, mostly in hot Kalahari conditions.
I must shame Nissan that they have not resolved the issues until now, being the 5th generation of Patrols on the market
One positive aspect: I also own an imported TD42-T GU I / 2000 with GRX trix and automatic climate control.
Here the issue does not manifest itself, not sure if it compensates to run the aircon unit permanently but even if manually switched off, I have not noticed the fault.
It means that probably the manual control dials (red and blue) are not up to scratch to shut down the hot air intake.

I have had my 4.8 GRX for a whole 2 weeks now and am walking around with a silly grin cause I like it so much ... had noticed the heat coming through vents while in traffic and was stumped by this as I could find no way to sort it. It is now a real irritation and the only issue I have with an otherwise perfect vehicle. Will have a word with Nissan dealership when it goes in for next service.
