Oom Mac, dis 'n baie goeie poging daai. Ek dink egter nie jy moet my vra hoe lyk "goeie" taalgebruik nou eintlik nie. Ek is nie 'n taalkundige nie. Nou begin ek gorrel......

Pieter, you are aware that I solved my 4.8 temperature problems with the replacement of my radiator. Afterwards I did similar tests in ambiet temperatures of 36degr and my temp guage stays in one position as if it was glued to it - klaar!!! Therefore, I think that the 4.2TD has it's own unique challenges, something the 4.8 owners should not struggle with. HOWEVER....the 4.8 generates as much heat underneath that bonnet. It is scary not being able to hold onto a bonnet strut for example when opening the bonnet after a hard drive...yes it is true! I played with the same "cutting vents into the bonnet" thoughts lately. It just makes very simple sence. I want to support our idea by emphasizing the fact that the only real change in the car design between the 1999 - 2003 body shape and the face-lift of the later model, lies in the size of the engine compartment. The face-lift models has a longer compartment, stretching further to the front with a slightly higher bonnet shape. My guess is that this change in engine compartment design was done to address this same problem. Our older model's engine compartment are more cramped for space.

It should not be a big challenge to insert neat air vents into the bonnet.

Hmmm - me thinks the older one [Y61] was designed for the 3.0 Di 4 cylinder engine - thus, those sixes don't feel at home in that cramped space [J G has a valid point there..]

The Y61 was originally launched around October 1997 with the following engine options:

TB42S (4.2 liter inline 6 Cylinder Carb Petrol)
TB45E (4.5 liter Inline 6 Cylinder Fuel Injected Petrol)
TD42 (4.2 liter inline 6 Cylinder Diesel)
RD28ETi (2.8 liter Inline 6 Cylinder Intercooled Turbo-Diesel)

So you see, they always intended for the Y61 to have an inline 6 motor (Some would say real Patrols have such an engine configuration    , but now I must run for cover)

The Aussies refer to the original Y61 as the GU I.

Somewhere around February 1999 the following motors were added to the line-up:
TD42T (4.2 liter inline 6 Cylinder Turbo-Diesel) for Australia
TB45S (4.5 liter inline 6 Cylinder Carb Petrol) mainly for pick-ups in the Middle East

In July 1999 the ZD30DDTi (3.0 liter Inline 4 Cylinder Turbo-Diesel) replaced the RD28ETi. I think this is what the Aussies call the GU II.

In June 2001 The TB48DE was introduced (4.8 liter Inline 6 Cylinder Fuel Injected Petrol). The Y61 also got its first facelift and the interior became a little more luxurious. This is the GU III

In June 2002 The intercooled TD42Ti replaced the TD42T

In June 2004, the Y61 was restyled to become the GU IV (the current model in SA), but the model code remained Y61...

Hi all.

Only saw this post now. On my Maidens bonnet on each side of the intercooler intake, there is a vent to allow hot air to escape. When sitting at a traffic light, one can see the hot air "haze" bellowing out of these vents !!! I'm sure this has a hug effect in reducing the temps inside as well as assisting the fan to suck air through the radiator. My temp gauge has never been close to 3/4. The highest i ever saw the temp gauge on the dash was just a fraction over 1/2, and this was while waiting on a bliksemse hot day at one of the many road blocks while traveling back from Ponta do Oro. On my EGT gauge, I have a CHT sensor on the thermostat housing that gave me a max temp of 104 deg C. but cooled as soon as we started moving.

I bought the Maiden with the external oil cooler on, so I don't have a before and after result.

My only heat issues are my EGT's... which climb unbelieveably high very quick...... but .... I am convinced now, after Oom Mac's Dyno Day, that BOSCH have let me down, and that my diesel pump timing is a little out of whack, as the motor is VERY noisy and bellows out black smoke under all driving conditions.

I do think that it will take a lot to heat up ( I stand corrected here) 14 litres of water....and once overheated....a lot to cool it down suficiently. So the oil cooler I'm sur will definitely assist in keeping the temp down and the vents give that little extra assistance.
here you can just see the vent on the bonnet

HELLO CEDRIC

Groete

Hi Pieter,

No problem, ek sal n paar photos vat en dimensions. Ek sal vanaand dit doen. het nie my cable vir my camera hier by die werk.

My olie cooler is voor tussen die grill en aircon radiator, net lanks die regte handse headlight (sal ook photo vat).

  Ja Stefan - hy is omtrent "warm" gemaak!!! Nou is dit tyd om hom weer so bietjie af te koel - anders loop hy dalk Frans en Ricster se 4.2 roete - en dit wil ek nie weer he nie. Ek het my fair share gehad met die 3.0L motor - nou moet hy kan loop for life - tot die body van die chassis af roes!!!!

The shark gills (bonnet vents) are trapezoidal in shape and are 200mm on three sides, and 190mm on the last side

Mine has rubber hose from the adapter plate between the back oil filter and the block that come forward to some contraption (see 2nd pic). I presume there is a sensor/thermostat that opens up when the oil is hot to allow it to flow through

the 2 pipes feed through to the oil cooler (195mm wide and 290 mm long), one pipe fitted to the top and the other pipe sits at the bottom. The cooler is held on by a bracket across the top of the cooler.

Like I said before, I bought the Maiden with all this stuff on...so I'm not sure if it helps..... BUT.... my temp gauge on the dash has never climbed over half !! (even though its just measuring the water temp)
I have a CHT sensor that is connected to my EGT gauge, and the highest temp shown on there was 106 deg C..... and that was on our way back from Mozambique waiting at a roadworks roadblock for 30 mins with the aircon on on a flippppppping hot day.

I hope this helps
