Martyn, always been a fan of Kumho, underrated IMHO.

However, loving my Maxxis, tested so far on tar ;-) sand and gravel and they perform better than any of my previous tyres. Looking forward to my Kaokoland trip to test on more terrains on long trip.

Howzit everyone.
So my hankook dynapro RF10 A/t tyres are on their last little bit of thread, whats a decent set of A/t tyres to get these days.

Ive been through khumos, bridgestones, maxxis, and coopers and 2 sets of hankooks.
ps. not a big fan of BF goodrich.

Im currently looking at the dunlop at5 a/t, or just getting another set of hankooks.

i drive about 30% dirt and offroad and the rest black top.

As I mentioned in my previous post I'd opt for a hybrid AT as i like to playon the trails.

The hybrid will hopefully perform better than a average AT off road and will probably give better milage than a Mud Terrain used primarilyon tar. Both the Mickey Thompson ATZ p3 and the new Maxxis Razor AT811 tick this box. Being a more aggressive than the average AT.

Based on Errols tires current price for 285/70R17 the MT ATZ is about R600 more per tire. Tinus mentioned a discount on maxxis tires thus making the maxxis more affordable.

Youtube videos available for MT reviews indicate mixed offroad use the MT gives about 60k km on mixed offroad conditions. There are not many reviews out on the Maxxis as the tire is relatively new on the market.

The maxxis AT is based off of the very popular maxxis Razor Mud Terrain so I think the maxxis would be a good bet.

I've added a pic of each tire. Both look good.

I'm also now looking at the Mickey Thompson BAJA ATZ P3, 32x11.5r15 is currently on a ridiculously good special on Errols..
I bought a second hand set of 33x12.5r15 cooper st maxx's, which is stuck in gauteng ... I'm actually really tempted to buy the baja atz p3's and re-sell the coopers....(i have owned a set op cooper st maxx's before, also an excellent tyre.)

General tyre comment, not aimed specifically at SJC:

I think people agonise too much over tyre choice these days. Doing "research" and deliberating over how much tar vs gravel vs occasional trail you drive etc is no longer really needed.
Modern mud terrain tyres are better than All-Terrains of years gone by by far. They grip well, last well, handle rain etc. No dangerous or difficult handling characteristics like the old days.
Conversely, for general off-roading you can use ANY tyre, regardless of tread pattern. You can get by with marie biscuit road tyres if you want to. Gnarly tread only comes into play if you do hard core stuff regularly and want that extra edge.
And it's quite rare that a truly crappy tyre comes along (Cooper comes to mind with some problems in recent history, and BFG AT's for a period a bit further into history, for example)
Even "cheap Chinese" tyres are obliged to meet a standard.

So save yourself the mental anguish and, if you're on a budget just buy what you can afford, or if you have bucks buy what you like.

Well I bought 4 lanvigator muds a couple of years back. Mind you I don't drive as often as I would like. But I've done a number of 4x4 tracks as well as the river trip 2021 (and going now again) with them and they performed amazingly well. Just remember they don't have triple sides like BFG so I take that into consideration when I air down. But *touch wood* its be going without issues

The triple side walls subject is also smoke and mirrors though, and you can't always take the marketing blurb at face value.
Nothing wrong with Lanvigator in my opinion. They were very good value for money a couple of years ago
