Southern Namibia - around the 70th Goerapan event
Patrollers,
Seeing that I have never been north of Upington, or in Namibia, and the fact that it is December an the urge to be productive is not very strong, I had a look at a possible tour after the September 2021 Goerapan event to experience some Southern Namibia.... obviously depending an a number of factors such as what covid may do to and for us by then...
I was looking at the following:
- Goerapan to Ai AIs Hot Springs
- Ai AIs Hot Springs to Fish River Lodge (any alternatives?)
- Fish RIver Lodge to Luderitz (include the wild horses and Kolmanskop if time allows)
- Luderitz to Sesriem Desert Camp (include Kolmanskop early morning, go via Quiver Tree Forest)
- Sossusvlei and Deadvlei
- Desert Camp to Sitzas Farm Campsite (just before the border)
- Sitzas Farm Campsite to Kgalagadi Lodge
- Kgalagadi Lodge to Red Sands Country Lodge and then home
Questions and comments:
- I want to drive the road on the Namibia side of the Orange river, hence the route from Ai Ais to Fish River Lodge that is on the western side of the canyon, any other suggestions?
- Has anyone camped at the Sesriem Desert Camp? other suggestions?
- has anyone camped at the Sitzas Farm Campsite? other suggestions?
- is it worth it, and do-able to do the drive from the Sitzas Farm Campsite to the Kgalagadi Lodge in one? GPS shows it to be 125kms. Would love to see more of the Kgalagadi but heard that accommodation can be problematic to secure?
So what do you think?

Re: Southern Namibia - around the 70th Goerapan event
Daai roete is baie mooier. Kamp sommer een aand daar langs die Oranjerivier, in Nam.

Peter is right. You cannot cross the border without staying in the Kgalagadi park.Peter Connan wrote: ↑02 Dec 2020 12:39 Ek is net bekommerd of mens deur die Kgalagadi mag ry sonder om in die Kgalagidi oor te slaap? Sadly, the same applies to Sendelingsdrif. You will only be able to use the pont if you're staying in the Richtersveld / Ais-Ais transfrontier park.
A final note - I've always found that Hobas is the nicer spot to stay on the Fish River Canyon. Maar dis nou seker net ekke.

Re: Southern Namibia - around the 70th Goerapan event
Sorry - just making an addition to my last post.
Whilst you won't be able to cross the border via Kgalagadi unless you stay over, there is the Rietfontein border post. Basically, Goerapan -> Ashkam -> Rietfontein -> Aroab -> Keetmanshoop. It's dirt road in Namibia from the border until Keetmanshoop, but it is good dirt road. The border post is nice and quiet too.

Die nuutste Weg Ry en Sleep (Des/Jan) het 'n roete in die suide van Namibië wat amper dieselfde is as jou beplande roete.
Daar is ook kontak besonderhede vir kampering.
