Steering wheel "play" - SORTED - with pics

Post by Russ Kellermann »

Hi guys, I noticed my steering wheel has about 4mm of play when grabbing it and pulling it towards yourself, and obviously the same amount when pushing it away again (ie:back towards the console) , what could this be and how can i remedy it. My truck has 100 000km on the odo and still in great nick. A friend of our on the forum had pointed me in what we believe is the right direction but while im online i thought i'd ask others opinions too.

Note: the play is not LEFT to RIGHT so we eliminated ideas of steering box adjustments. The whole shaft moves 4mm up until the knuckle prior to the steering box, whereafter it is a solid connection from the small shaft to the box.

No play on mine. Russ, there should not be play because of wear and tear on that low kilos. My gutt tells me that a bolt in the steering "line" is loose such as the "clamp" where the upper-steering rod connects to the lower part of the system. It can even be right at the top where the steering wheel fits onto the rod. The wheel ties down onto the splints with a nut. If that nut is loose, it is possible to have play. Just be careful for the airbag system when inspecting in that area.

eish, ok, guess i'm gonna have to get involved now. Just sucks cause i cant get in there, no bloody space i tell you! I did check the bolts that clamp the long shaft to the knuckle and the bolts that clamp the short shaft to the knuckle, all tight. Anyone with a workshop manual for better understanding of inners, as its hard to see due to the metal knuckle cover.
