First Impressions 4.8 with turbo

Post by IanT »

Morning guys, thought I would give you my first impressions after getting my 4.8 back after having a turbo charger fitted

Got my Trol back last Thursday from Thys the conversion took about 6 weeks, it was only supposed to take 3 but there where hold ups at both Viper and SAC through to fault of Thys

My Brief to him was I did not want a pocket rocket! I do not want to dice GTI's from robot to robot (I have the Z for that!) but I wanted more power and torque for the open road, up hills and towing! I also wanted a conservative set up that will last me for years to come

I am still in the running in period 200km so can not floor it yet, is it more powerful? Definaly! on the dyno it is now sitting at 195KW at 4000rpm up from 110, this is on the rear wheels, I am running a very conservative boost of 0.45 bar and there is software installed that it can not go above this.

I think the biggest difference is the torque, this is now sitting at 612nm at 2000rpm, and you feel it! On pull off there is 0 turbo lag it pulls strongly right through the rev range.
It is most noticeable on the open road, it used to drive me mad with the cruise control on at 120 to 130 and as soon as you hit a low uphill it gears down and the revs jump to 4000 then gears up and you are back to 2000, this is now a thing of the past! There is plenty power and torque available so no more hunting for gears

There is a long lowish uphill on my way home on the N1, the one from the south and exiting at William Nicol, driving at 100 I can just lower my right foot and it pulls like a truck, no gearing down it just pulls

Overtaking is a breeze, sitting at 120 just pull over put the right foot down and it go's, again no gearing down

Is it quick? Yes and no, I have not put my foot to the floor yet but moving 3 tonnes from standstill is never going to be quick, on the open road yes it is, I was driving normaly on the N1 to work and looked down at the speedo and was doing 170 and it was effortless

The exhorst is also great, I told Thys I did not want a loud exhorst (my old one was a 62mm which used to drive me nuts on the open road with the noise (even above the mud terrain tyres :surprised:) I now have a 76 on and it is great sound like a standard 4.8, turbo is also quiet I can just hear it when I put my foot down. Totally different from Hellboy who sounds like you have released a 100 demons when you put your foot down and the turbo spools up and the exhorst starts to yell!

I think the easiest way of describing my set up is that it feels like a 4.8 but with 2 additional pistons

Am I happy? Yes very much so Thanks Thys

HellBoy is now at him for some additions and tunning :surprised: Now where are those bloody GTI drivers :blonde:

Those are impressive figures! It will be interesting to see the fuel consumption figures, especially with towing. Without the gearbox hunting and if driven at the same speeds as previously, it might even improve
Cheers, Gareth
I think, therefore I am........ I think?!?!?!

To early to tell yet, will fill and do a few hundred km then fill again. What I do know is it cost me about R1500 in fuel already  Had to drain out all my 93 octain as the turbo's will only run on the 95 or higher :surprised:

Nice numbers and as I know Thys, it is likely very much a pleasure to drive.

Enjoy! :woo:
May the road be long.. and dirty.

Man, this sounds fantastic!
That issue with trying to cruise at 120 - 130 and it always hunting, I cant stand it!

One day when Im big I'll tell the wife it has to go in for a new air filter.

Hi Ian

Very nice figures on your Patrol.
Will be fantastic Tow vehicle for sure.

Amazing torque low down, at the exact rpm one would be towing.

As a comparison, to mine which is Super-Charged, your figures are better all the way to 4000 Rpm for both Torque and Power.

I would be interested in how the gear-box lock up performs for you?

As at the speeds and revs where you are making real power is at that transition point where the gearbox locks in and out all the time.
So I find I must travel a little faster, true 120, to keep it locked.
However, if too much pedal is supplied, no matter the speed, my gear box will lock out again.

So find I have to modulate the power application progressively to keep her locked in.

As mentioned
I would be interested in how the gear-box lock up performs for you?
