I have not made any progress on this as yet. I'll definitely post info when I get around to development.

Hey Guys

I'm having custom gull wings made for my GU at R&D 4x4. I should collect the Troll this coming Monday and I will send pictures of the final product when I can.

I actually ordered the Big Country Wings after seeing a set for Cruiser at R&D, but Big Country wouldn't supply them. I was told that the reason for this is that the GU version that they make is still in "development" and they would prefer to fit it themselves. I live in CPT and they are in Gauteng so I can't send my Troll up there for fitment.

Big Country actually not made many of them for the GU's when compared to the Cruiser so I understand the circumstances when it comes to the product development life cycle of the wings for the GU and why they wanted to fit the wings themselves.

Anyway R&D, who I ordered the wings through and do all the work on my GU, offered to custom make the wings for me when Big Country could not supply. When they offered I first went and took a look at another Patrol that happened to be there where they had also custom made the wings and I was happy with what I saw.

The wings are made from aluminum and is powder coated black. I went with the smooth plate finish and I prefer it to the checker plate finish, which is also an option, because it matches the finish on the rest of my vehicle.

I considered the wings from Australia that I see where posted earlier on in this thread, but the fully imported price of just one wing is more than the entire project from R&D. Another issue with the Aus product is that they only supply the drivers side wing if you have the GU with the rear aircon unit.

The design and fitment of the wings is totally different to the GQ. The GU windows are glued in with lots and lots of adhesive, which is done in factory, and the windows have to broken out. They do not pop out like windscreen. The glass had to be broken (good bye travel stickers) and then the remaining pieces cut from the bodywork. It took R&D 1.5 days to remove all the glass and glue, before they could start with the build.

R&D opted to build a frame within the window panel and then build the gull wing into the frame. This means that the structural rigidity is built into the frame and not the gullwing like in the Big Country design. The Cruiser version that I 1st saw are double plated and are very heavy as their wing is designed for the structural rigidity to cater for body flex etc. My wings are much lighter in comparison to the Big Country wings. The only downside is that the entry space through the window in my design is slightly reduced by the frame, which is more evident on the passenger side due to the rear aircon.

The original price was based on the Big Country wings, but the final price is not known yet for the custom build. R&D said it would probably be a bit cheaper. I'll know more when I collect this coming week so i will let the forum know. I don't think that they would have made a template for the build although it would be good if they did for the rest of the GU community.

Will do John. I have a 40lt National Luna that I will put in the back so that you can see how it would look if you were to do the same.

I brought the Troll home today with the wings fitted. Some pictures to show the final product. Give the guys at R&D a call....I told them that the Patrol guys are on their way 😎. In case anyone is wondering what has been fitted to the inside of the wings...I had sound and heat damping fitted to the inside as the black metal attracts a lot of heat and the sound damping to keep the noise of the free flow out of the cab.
