GQ major maintenance

Post by offroadbiker »

So I thought of buying another Patrol beginning of 2020, but after carefull consideration I think I will keep my GQ and want to do some serious TLC on the old Truck.

So as I am mechanically dysfunctional I need some advice and input on what I should have done.

Background on what has been done over the last say 100 000km - Currently on 449 000km

338 000km Waterpump replaced - Anything required?
345 000km Clutch replaced, new bakkie clutch 434 000km - Sorted
340 000km Rear Wheal bearings replaced - Replace or service/grease?
383 000km Radiator replaced - Michael advised to replace with bigger one
400 000km oil cooler fitted - Does this need servicing?
402 000km Calipers front overhauled
415 000km Front Wheal bearings adjusted - Replace or service/grease?
423 000km ALL oils replaced
Brake fluid replaced
Anti freeze replaced
430 000km New Bilsteins - Sorted
432 000km All belts replaced
432 000km Clutch booster replaced
434 000 km
Replace clutch and fork rubber
Skim Fly wheel
Diesel pump calibrated
Injectors reconned
New draglink
New steering dampener
New sway bar links front and back
New engine mounting
Service starter

So what else is required for maintenance to get the GQ as reliable as possible???????????????????????????

What I do know that needs done:
Replace rear bolt on manifold as this broke off.
Replace front disks and pads.
Replace current air filter with SOJO filter

Does one service the Turbo???????????

Water pump: I think this should be good for at least 250-300k km.

Oil cooler: No service required, except to keep it clean externally. But be careful not to damage the fins during maintenance.

Wheel bearings: I am pretty sure mine are still the originals (just about to pass 400k km). I doubt they need any attention, but with wheel bearings (front and rear) how well they were installed can make a huge impact on their lifespan. A small mistake or shortcut here can make a huge difference in their reliability. I am inclined to leave them alone as far as possible. The manual does give service intervals for the front, but I can't remember seeing anything about the rear?
Radiator: A good radiator fed with anti-freeze should last a long time. But a bigger one, carefully fitted to eliminate air gaps around it can reduce operating temps. And overheating is probably the biggest killer of engines in general. However, backing off the throttle is probably at least as effective, maybe even more...

So the question is whether you have overheating problems to the point where having to back off becomes a problem for you.

:mytwocents:

Lastly, what about the alternator and starter? Either of these can spoil a holiday, but shouldn't prevent you from getting home.
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.

Michael serviced the starter after Bots trip.
Alternator was replaced last year because boost or preasure for brakes was not there..

Hi Dirk

We recently did a series with Andrew St Pierre White doing what you are planning to do. He bought a 105 Landceuiser with 300 000 km on the clock and is currently posting the videos on the rebuild. Terrain Tamer Australia assisted us by sponsoring some parts. Please have a look at what he is doing and the design intend of the Terrain Tamer parts.

He will show in the videos to come what is needed to change, what is nice to change and what they changed just because it was supplied by Terrain Tamer.

Regards

Marinus
