Help with leak !

Post by Craig Lord »

Hi guys

Spotted a leak this morning. It's just leaking from a pipe where it is clamped onto the top of a filter. Seems like its water and its leaking quite alot :helpsign: I'll try sort it out but I would like to know what that filter does ect and if I take it off do I have to bleed the system when I put it back? .. I'm guessing it's part of the oil cooling system

Here are some pics, I hope they are good enough

Thanks guys

Howzit Craig,

Years back I had a similar leak in that spot.

It was key to replace all the pipes & bleed the system as this small leak can cause an airlock in the system & you run the risk of cooking the head.

:mytwocents:

Its good that you spotted this now.

:salute:

Yea now I'm going to be stressed about that until I can get it to G tech .. I managed to get another hose clamp around it just underneath the other one without having to take the pipe off and its stopped the leak 99% but there is still a small bit of moisture forming there when its running. Hopefully because I didnt remove the pipe I wont have to bleed it. It must have started on the drive home last night because it wasnt there when we left. Luckily we didnt lose alot of water, the radiator and the reservoir are still full just slightly down. QQQ but yes I think it's time to do all the hoses just for piece of mind !

I also found this detached earth cable. Does anyone know where its rightful home is ?

That is a water/oil heat exchanger. I would dump that spring clamp and put a proper hose clamp on (like on the other pipe) and see if that cures the problem.

As for the earth, probably somewhere on the intake manifold but anywhere on the engine is probably fine?

I had the same idea, seems to have worked thankfully! Shot for the info on the part in question
They really know how to put things in places where it's nearly impossible to get to dont they! Going to replace all the hoses and clamps anyway for piece of mind. I will attach the earth to the engine, I think I saw where it used to be so that will be sorted tomorrow thanks

I think that earth strap goes onto the back of the head on one of the studs.

Good luck with the pipes. When you replace the pipes on the oil cooler, it is also an idea to make sure it is not blocked. The oil cooler on my father's 4.5 was blocked solid and took an hour or two to get clear again.

Not sure about the 4.8's. On the 4.5 there is a metal coolant pipe which bolts on to the inlet manifold. The earth is secured on one of those bolts.

Thanks for all the advise guys  I definitely will get hold of Marinus and organise a pipe kit. I have to come to Pretoria in October for a week anyway so I think I'll see if they can be changed then. Not so sure I trust myself to do it and bleed the systems properly !
