Alex makes a good point and as I have recently owned both I believe I can comment objectively.

The bottom line is although the turbo diesel is much more of a pleasure to use in every way I believe there is a lot more attention to detail required on the diesel engine than the petrol engine to have the same confidence in it.

I am almost but not quite there on the turbo diesel so if I had a choice of which to use on a solo trip through the CKGR it would still be the petrol. However doing the same trip with a caravan behind I would opt for the turbo diesel, not quite have the same peace of mind but the consumption and torque would sway me.

Both PC and I have done the figures on how long the TD takes to pay for itself over the petrol. I do more mileage and my initial costs where higher but PC's initial petrol consumption was higher and we both come out at about 2 to 3 years.

So if used purely for overlanding with no heavy caravan/trailer my choice would still be the 4.5 but as soon as everyday use and towing come into the equation the TD takes over. However the 4.2 without a turbo could be an option for overlanding as well.

I fully agree with fuel consumption, given that 120l of fuel gets you a little over 600 km on a 4.5, however with the rest, I cannot agree.

Standard 4.5 gives roughly 105 kW on the wheels (provided it is in good condition) and if you truly want to compare apples with apples, after Sojo got hold of my 4.5, it was producing slightly more torque and a lot more power than the 4.2TD. So we either need to compare a standard 4.2 with a standard 4.5 or a Sojo 4.2 with a Sojo 4.5. In both cases the 4.5 comes out on top. :blonde:

In terms of reliability both engines are rock solid but the 4.5 is bullet proof. Even a sick engine will still get you home.

Don't get me wrong, the 4.2TD is amazing, and yes it does have better fuel consumption, but I will never get rid of my 4.5. EVER.
May the road be long.. and dirty.

Remind us all again what internal engine parts that 4.5 is running to make it "bullet proof" under boost??? :rolling:

Ek se dit weer Diesel tuning is ongeraak in S.A

Gentlemen, I have no interest in sparking a huge debate, firstly, because we are now effectively hijacking someone else's thread, and secondly, because it is not the Patrol way.

What I can say however is the huge amount of support for the 4.2TD is a testament to the work that Michael has been doing. I think so many 4.2 TD's went through his hands that people are now considering that as standard and to this end I can say Well done Michael. :bravo:

Just the fact that this debate has even begun means that there are nowadays many good options for the Patrol lovers, whether it be diesel or petrol standard or modified (Sojo, Graham etc.), 1980 or Y62. The future of Patrol looks good. :woo:

And BTW: Sean I am happy that you are satisfied with your vehicle.
May the road be long.. and dirty.
