Another option is to make your own.. some old car tyre and some steel galvanized or stainless steel cable and some DIY

Nee wat ....a proper tpms makes lot more sence ....dont dig in point one deflate to 06 or o5 if you have to ...at that price a winch is looking way better ......i do big sand drives in moz never needed them ...got rubber mats in car if i really need to put something under the wheel

I don't think you can go wrong- they unfortunately can only be used from one side, which halves their lifespan. But you aren't going to use them every day.

The one thing that these ladders do well that the old tyre and cable don't, is that they wedge themselves in the ground, making the board stick. The old tyre and cable sometimes just get spat out with wheelspin.

Tinus, it is a lot of money, and not something I will be able to afford in a hurry. But when you see in how many situations the Aussie guys use them, they are actually an amazing piece of kit to have. I have seen on big muddy hills where they pack a few of them, and road build with them. It just takes a maxtrax here and there to gain, and keep, enough traction/momentum to get to the next one a few meters away, and eventually get to the top of the hill. Other thing, is that a winch is a bit useless out in the desert when you are on your own, and there is not a tree or anchor in sight to winch off of.

Suppose you really need one of every type of recovery apparatus to cover all the eventualities. That said, my wishlist for my rig has a winch before a maxtrax, even though I will need to build a suitable bumper first.

NoPressure, I agree with you. But I would have killed for those compared to hauling branches, and trying to make traction devices in a river bed a while ago. I dug myself in on a climb out, and could not go backward or forward. Rear bumper was nearly in the sand. I was on my own with only my 9 year old grandson, and it took us over an hour to get out. I was very lucky to eventually find a piece of thick bark from a fallen tree that was nearly 3 meters long, and about half a meter wide. I hacked it in half in it's length, and fed it through under the front wheels till it got to the rear wheels. Just that little bit of traction all the wheels had for a few centimeters, got me out. Granted, a winch would have had me out there in a few minutes. It would also have helped if I just had my Hi-Lift with me as well, but we were not planning on getting stuck

If I had a beer for everytime I was too lazy to let out of my tyres...

But, I always carry my recovery gear...because if I want to mess up a day...then you have to get stuck with my wife on board. I rather pay the extra fuel bill.
