Die Ratel

Post by NoPressure »

Ok guys, so I can't help it, I'm fetching my Patrol next week Friday and importing it over the weekend to Namibia.

I have read through probably 85% of all the posts on this forum, and contacted some of you (continuously)
Therefore, I want to honour everyone that makes this forum great. I am on other forums and they often times get filled with topics and discussions that I actually want to get away from (the reason for owning a 4x4This forum is filled with people from different walks of life, but somehow there is respect ( even with a little bit of tomfoolery with regards to tyre sizes, fuel and beer choices QQQ ).

So back to Ratel, my red 2000 4.5 GRX, and what I've done thus far. Thanks Fanus for this vehicle. So I have done some preventative maintenance. I replaced all the water pipes, flushed the Radiator, checked visco (thinking of doing an electric conversion sometime), checked fan for cracks. I had to replace the front crank seal due to an oil leak. The bushes were shot so replaced them as well as steering damper (with one from my old range rover - hope the oil leak doesn't return). Did all the filters and oils and power steering. Checked all wheelbearings and if hubs worked, and happy that the diff lock works great. Found a couple of loose nuts and bolts which we tightened. I had the fuel pump tested, I would say it tested a low normal, so will keep my eyes on that.

Greased the propshaft, and replaced the rear right lens - on our way to fix the rear bumper lights. There are still a couple of things on the list that include the MAF sensor and PCV. Like I said mostly preventative.

Thus far I've replaced two of the tyres with Dunlop MT2 255/85R16 - yes I like them skinny, it goes well with my Reinhardtsgebot Windhoek Light.

I got a OBD14 to 16pin adapter and with Bluetooth adapter. The plan is to bluetooth it to a new double din infotainment (ridiculous word) android and then run Nissan Data Scan or Torque Pro off of it. Im hoping for info Coolant Temp, Oil pressure, Volt meter. I also got a reverse camera I want to install , dont know where yet, as I have small children and always reverse park at home (or in town).

I think there is more, but I'm running out of English...

Anyway, it's a bit premature, but I'm excited and can't wait :blonde:

You sound like a buddy of mine that every day only had 200 or so English words in his box.... after that he could only continue in Afrikaans until the next day! He then say: "My Ingels is nou op, ek sal moet wag tot more voor ek in die rooi taal kan aangaan..."

I usually try to rather be quick to listen and thus slow to speak Oom Mac :duel:

I agree with your friend about the amount of English words per day. Afrikaans is just so descriptive.

Anyway, die homokinetiesekoppeling gaan vandag ondersoek word! :poke:

On another note, I often see the Ozzies have two (or three) antennas on their bull bars. I'm sure one is for the UHF, is the other for the mobile phone? Where does one get one, and how does that connect to your phone?

Ozzies prefer UHF to VHF where we in SA use VHF for ORRA channels. One of their antennas normally is the UHF antenna. I have heard of antennas for cell phones, but am not sure how they work.
They also have an "antenna" or pole that indicate the height of the vehicle fitted to the bull bar.

Yes thanks I do have an oldish VHF setup in my Ranger. Just read up quickly on the net regarding the external cell phone antennas - seems too much like a gimmick to me. I have a Satellite phone anyway for the real remote travels. I hope to upload some photos soon

My wife suggested that I should mention that Ratel is a Honey badger in English or as some people on this forum will remember a military vehicle. It is not to be confused by a Rattle - which is a baby's toy, or the sound an old man's dentures makes when left out in the cold.

So I'm halfway home today. :layrubber:
