Patrol 4.8 Starter
At the security checkpoint at the Gautrain station I was asked to turn the ignition off and start the car again. The off part worked out pretty well.
Unfortunately my toolbox was at home as I needed the space for the jump seats. We had loads of kids to transport this holiday so I had no boot for tools and ammo crates. So the AA had to tow me home on the flatbed.
After checking the all the fuses, relays and fusable links and all the cables it was the bloody last place I checked that turned out to be the problem. The starter is on its way out. Solenoid clicks as it should and power is applied where it needs to be.
After a short negotiation with a large hammer the starter has decided to cooperate for the time being. But I think best is to get another one.
I'm looking for options so please help. So far I have the following.
1) I can have it refurbished for R1100 or R1300 if I get them to take it out as well.
2) I see Ian has sourced a Bosch for R2300 which seems reasonable.
3) Better option?

Re: Patrol 4.8 Starter
On an auto Patrol it is easy.
1: Buy a new one.
2: Install the new one.
3: Refurbish the old one.
4: Chuck the refurbished one in the boot for a spare.
Seriously, I tour with the 4.5 (manual), and I travel with a spare starter. There is no way me, my wife and kids can push start that truck, and a push start is an option only with a manual. If you are in an auto, you are pretty messed in such situations....
Good luck if you DIY. Removing the starter in a 4.8 is actually a horrible experience....

Re: Patrol 4.8 Starter
I was a bit apprehensive in tackling this task as I've read it is a bit of a pain to get out, but fortunately it was a quick 15 minute job.
The little extension did the trick. The wrench and extension just needed to loosen the bolt so the spanner could turn it the rest of the way.
I'll see about a replacement on Monday. Thanks for the advice Ian.

Re: Patrol 4.8 Starter
Paul - if I may ask. How long is that socket extension ? Also tried with mine. My socket extension seems to be just too long to fit nicely.... Would you mind measuring it and posting the length ?pgreeff wrote: ↑13 Jan 2019 10:45 I was a bit apprehensive in tackling this task as I've read it is a bit of a pain to get out, but fortunately it was a quick 15 minute job.

Re: Patrol 4.8 Starter
Total length of the extension is 12.5 cm. I measured it so I can buy my own for the same reason. My neighbour was kind enough to lend me a selection of his favourite extensions.

Weird. My extension is 12.5cm on the dot. But seems to be just too long to fit. Did you remove the top bolt from the top of the engine ? Or from underneath ? Just curious. I battled like crazy to get that bolt out....

Re: Patrol 4.8 Starter
Perhaps that is a difference between the 4.5 and 4.8?
I removed the top bolt from the top of the engine. The wrench could only turn ever so slightly, just enough so I could undo the bolt with the spanner. Once the bolt was loose enough I used just the extension.
I have also read of people coming in from the bottom, but I can't see how it is possible.

Re: Patrol 4.8 Starter
Removing the starter on a manual 4.5 is a breeze. 10 minute job - if it even takes that long, and that extension is not required.
It is the 4.8 which gave me grey hairs the other day., and for which my extension seems to be just, just too long....
I eventually got the top bolt loose from underneath the vehicle. But I was speaking fluent French by that time....
Anyways, was curious. Will see if it is better when I install the new starter when it gets here. This will be tomorrow or the day after.

Re: Patrol 4.8 Starter
Ian, I just had another thought, I recall my ratchet head was too big to fit. I ended up using the breaker bar which needs a lot less space. Perhaps that explains why it was easy to get in there.
