Gearbox drain plug stuck

Post by Unkredible »

Hi All,
I can't undo my gearbox drain plug - the 13mm square hole is damaged and the socket just slips out under pressure . I even tried holding it in place with a jack... Have also tried the Chisel trick, heat etc but it just wont budge.
Any Ideas / tricks on how to get the plug out? (will replace with a new one after the oil change)
Thanks
Bruce

How much meat is on that plug?

Can you weld in a tool? Risky though with the heat to the casing...

Otherwise a large "Easy Out" is there enough material to drill a hole for that?? But it may just strip.

Its a scary one.

If it were me I would let a pro sort it...

First get the replacement plug.
Then first make sure you can get the filler plug out. you dont want to drain the gearbox only to find that you cant fill it again.
Although its only a small amount of welding, its advisable to disconnect the battery while welding.
Then weld a 13mm bolt into the stripped drain hole bung. Then turn it out with a power bar.

EDIT: I see you are in Rivonia. If you come by my place I can help you

Thanks Anthony,
the filler plug is no problem, I checked that first :-)
I will try get the plug from Nissan and then make contact - no particular rush, but gearbox, Diff and tc oil change is on my list...
I have limited welding skills, but a bit nervous to take this on...

So Anthony helped me get it out by welding a bolt onto it.

I recently had a similar problem with my rear diff drain plug, and managed to weld a strong bolt onto it, and remove it. Managed to get a nice piece of weld spatter lodged in my arm whilst lying under the car welding upside down, but it healed in a couple of months :-)

Had to replace it with a new one, but luckily I carry a spare or 2...

I am not usually one for these weird tools sold by the likes of Verimark, but have seen a tool which they sell at such places and is supposed to be able to grip all sorts of weird and damaged bolt heads.

It consists of a whole bunch of hardened pins packed together side by side like sardines in a tin, and the idea is that the pins can slide in or out and effectively conform to the shape of the bolt. I wonder if such a thing might not work? I mean, even if it was destroyed in the process, as long as it got the plug out...

Should be a stock item - quite a few models use the same plug.
