Free wheel hub mod

Post by Lonewolf »

I bought my patrol 98 4.2D with free wheel hubs (Safari I believe). I am told this is a mod. My problem is when I recently went to Matroosberg, coming down hill, the free wheel hubs skipped a spline every now and then. When I opened them back home I can see some damage on the ends of the splines. It looks like the splines of the free wheel hub and the thingy on the axle does not mesh enough to stay together. Question: Is the free wheel hub not the correct mod? There is a spacer behind the free wheel hub of 3mm. If I remove this the hub engages even in "free"

Anybody with some advice

Free wheeling hubs were standard on these vehicles, but there are aftermarket versions too. You have not shown us what they look like externally, so I don't know whether yours are the standard ones, but the standard ones don't use a spacer like the one you show.

It could be that the splines don't fit properly, or that some wear or dirt in the mechanism is preventing it from engaging properly. I would say dismantle the hub and check if the splib=ned section fits on the end of the side-shaft correctly.

Cannot quite see what hubs they are. If they are standard hubs, they should not have the spacer, as pointed out earlier by Peter.

Can you post a photo of what the complete hub looks like ?

Another possibility to investigate. If you refer to the diagram I posted on page two of the thread here : http://www.patrol4x4.co.za/viewtopic.ph ... 5&start=10

The inner pinion of the hub (the bit that slides over the side shaft) should be held in place with a circlip. Not having it held in place might cause issues perhaps, and I cannot see from your photos if this was the case.

Not entirely sure about this. I seem to recall that Paul Greeff does not have circlips on his manual hubs and does not have issues. But worth investigating.

The bits on your hub that I can identify look like mine. I didn't have any issues with the circlip on the inside but I do think it should be on the outside holding the drive clutch gear in place.

Manual hub discussion Have a look at our discussion when I installed mine. If yours is the same I don't think you would need the spacer, especially if the circlip is move to the groove on the outside of the gear. If the circlip is moved to the outside (not sure if the spacer on the shaft needs to be removed too) then the gear should move a little bit inward on the shaft allowing you to see the groove on the shaft. Michael posted some great photos of this on the thread above.

Johan, from what I can see there are some problems.......

The spacer ring is something that should not be there.
You also need some parts.......

First thing you should look for is a spacer ring. Part number is 40255-C6000. It is surposed to sit inside the hub and work as a spacer ring to make sure the bub mechanism sits where it should.
Google the part number then you will have a better idea.

Next is the "bush hub free" ring (this is Nissans term for it) part number 40253-01J00. This sits on top of the spacer ring and centers your hub properly. Without these parts your hub will not function as they should.

Hope this helps

Thanks for all the input. Will post a photo of the hub and get working on the other homework.
