Help - Patrol Cover

Post by Mark B »

Hi - I may be asking a stupid question - but will seek guidance from the community. I have signed a 2 year contract to work Ethiopia - unfortunately taking the Patrol with is not an option. It thus has to be parked outside (not in a garage) for about 2 years. Has anyone got thoughts on a good car cover that I can buy - its gonna be parked in Durban so i am anxious to avoid something that may trap moisture (humidity). Thanks

I would rather store it on blocks in a lockup garage with some form of dehumidified ventilation.

Consider selling, invest the money and buy newer and better when you return...
I have experience of this... much better in the long run. In two years your vehicle will lose around 30k value and age significantly (depending on current value and age). Same amount invested 2 years will earn around 15-20k = a total saving around 50k for a newer vehicle in 2 years time!

Besides the rust, which is a sure bet in Durban, you will have issues with seels. The rubbers in the car will go brittle and you will start to leak oil when you start it up again.

Unless you have done lots of mods on the car, I would also rather sell it.

The only alternative I would consider is to lend it to family you trust, and who are prepared to drive it about once a week.
15 years ago, I had a platkar that stayed with my folks for 3 years. They drove it once a week. I also had the chassis treated with tar, for rust. I am not sure if this still gets done these days. But that was sufficient. The car was still as I had left it.

I agree with Alex and Chris. If you can, rather sell it and buy a newer one when gou get back, if you come back.

I dont agree intirely. Sure you can invest the money better, buy selling the Patrol is just sad....
Putting the investment part aside, get the chassis and suspension treated with something before parking it. In Namibia they use seal oil if Im not mistaking to stop the rust.
Also drain the coolant when it is going to stand for so long.
