Ammo Box on roofrack?

Post by vanhack »

I am going on a 3 night trip to the mountains next week. I have the plastic ammo boxes, as shown below

Image

Any clever ideas on trapping it down to the roof rack, was hoping to dump stuff in there that I don't need for campsite, mostly recovery gear and tools....and beer, as crossing borders with booze is not allowed. :naughty: QQQ

I have a front runner II roof rack, and I am sure the front runner corner mounts are going to be $$$$$

I have 6 ammo box containers that I use on my roof rack. When I bought them it came with a strong canvas cover that holds 3 ammo boxes. The cover has straps that one can feed a tie down through to secure it to the roof rack. This helps keep the dust out and hold them nicely against each other.

Looks like this...

Don't know if you can get it in your part of the world, but down here we get ammo box covers. Which is a canvas bag with zips that is waterproof and dust proof, you bolt/tie it into your roof rack and the ammo box's fit inside

Maybe an ammo box bag or some ratchet straps...

No special bags available here, only 2 places that sell the ammo boxes here and they don't have the accessories. But I have a roof rack sack/bag that I can put boxes in for protection from rain/dust I guess.

Will need to secure them down to the roof rack, a ratchet strap would be enough I guess.

I fitted 3 of these cargo rails on my roofrack (left, right and middle) and use ratchet straps to tie my ammo boxes, tents, chairs etc. onto the rack.

4x Frontrunner brackets are ZAR455 (on their website)

Get 'cargo rings' at ZAR20 each and ratched strap them down. M8 Eye nut from 4x4direct

You can get a bolt and eye-nut to do the same from the bolt and nut shops for half that...

But to be honest I have found it better to just pass the ratchet straps under the roof-rack, as eye nuts are just always in the wrong place.

I just used a normal ratchet strap and tied my ammo case down directly onto the roofrack on the River trip....... worked like a bomb
