Hi Gents

The latest episode from the guys at 4WD Action in Australia includes a couple of Patrols. A ZD30 GU and a supercharged Y62 towing a camper that sounds great until it breaks both CV's and power steering lines. Have a watch and add your favourite Patrol videos

Moral of the story,
You can pimp an old truck and give it lots more power, but beware. Modern 4x4s are designed to spec, not over-desgined like 80,60 series, MQ, GQ or GUs.
Also, if the Y62 does not make enough power without a blower, then you need to see a psychologist.

But makes for good entertainment!

There are two quotes of note here:
1) Too much power is never enough.
2) Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Yes, although not all old trucks. Even some pretty phenomenal ones like Unimogs and Steyr Pinzgauers break when you add more power.

Great comments...

and I guess that's why diesels 'walk the torque' and hardly ever break driveshafts :imsorry:

says the petrolhead....

John, maybe, except my car now has close to double the torque it used to have... I think it has a lot to do with driving style, but still, both CV's at once? That's a bit scary.

Bruce, also check out Off course 4x4 (our very own Ant Forgey is one of the presenters) and Simple Life Overlanding (Kirbster, also a forum member as one of the creators).

Reminds me of doing the Hex trail a few (many) years back - that infamous J-section. The pic was taken the moment after engaging all lockers, bouncing, wheels spinning, rock (sudden traction), cluck ... My mates Cruiser eventually got fixed by mechanic (JB) on the mountain 5 days later. He was the only one that attempted that section though so kudos to him. Jip, have never seen both drive shafts break simultaneously...

That certainly looks like a tough obstacle!

Old vs new, I think it was clear to me...

New won the mud holes
Old won the rocks at angle.

Prophetic and wise words by Jocko at 54m32sec, “this is CV territory...”
But with that much power, once the front wheels dropped back and got traction again, no CV would have held.

That V8 petrol is a beast!
