This weekend I got to pull the pinion Flange to find this..

I checked it with a straight edge and vernier and don't see that it has got any "smaller", but it is rough and will probably eat up my new seal. I took to it with a bit of fine water paper, but I can't make a mark on it.

What is the chance that someone has something like this laying about, or know where I can pick one up. Can I have this it turned on a lathe, and how much have I got to work with before it no longer seals to the oil seal? Am I going to weaken it too much by turning it down slightly and adding a collar to get it back to the correct diameter for the seal?

I know I don't update this thread enough, but I found something interesting that may actually help out some of the Safari guys a little.

I was busy setting up the new Safari TC, and found the mounts to take an 11mm bolt. Now some of the Nissan guys are telling me that it's not possible, but I took the mount to BMG to match a bolt to the mount, and they told me to go to an engineering works. Anyhow, so in my quest to simplify the entire install from TC back to the suspension, I "wanted" some things to happen in a certain way.

Last night a smacked out the TC mounts bushings, and my feeling that Hardbody suspension rubbers would work here, was right.

It is a 40mm ID mount and takes the Hardbody leaf spring fixed side rubber bushing. This makes it so that the TC can now be mounted to the chassis with a M20 bolt instead of the 11mm standard bolt.

My install has now added another component with the same mounting spares as most of the suspension. Now to add engine and gearbox mounts to this list. Just needing some 40mm ID pipe with around a 4mm wall thickness. I can find, but have to take an entire 6m length. Now if I have to go this route, I may as well go with the 8mm wall thickness and purchase the full length pipe, and have enough over for my 3 link control arms and panhard rods setup, that is on my wish list.

Anybody out there with a 500mm length of 40mm schedule 40 or 80 laying around that I can take off your hands a fair price.

Today I had a few minutes spare again and attempted to install the pinion to the H260 diff. Marked it up where the thread took and new I had to tighten it back up 11,5 turns.

Well I got it as far as 1/8 turn from where it should be and it got so tight that I broke my wong fong power bar.

Now I'm trying to get clarity on the H series diffs, as to the use of a spacer washer and NOT a crush washer. This would take away the possibility of causing trouble if I am off by the amount I have tightened the nut.

I must admit that it feels like I still have a slight bit of in/out play on the pinion, and this worries me.

My research on the Aussie forums told me that it should just be a remove of pinion and put back with new seal. No setup needed, just turn back the same number of turns and we should be ok. That should be 11,5 turns on mine, but now I can't get it back that last 1/8 turn. I have a few pieces of very bent steel now to get it this far.

I have had a few guys post them for me, but the Safari manuals I get don't cover the H260 diff. The GU and GQ manuals that do cover the H260, I am not sure if the specs apply. The diff looks different from what I can see. Is there different models under the H260 range, or have I got it all wrong, and a H260 is a H260.

Then to find a torque wrench, is the next mission.

??? I have no idea. But I would assume the assembly instructions would be very similar, even iff the exact model is different.

As for a torque wrench, you could make a plan using a strongarm and a suitable draw-scale. Or a rope-and-pulley system, although that is cumbersome to work with. But I wonder if the tool hire places don't rent them out?

Peter, I have another "problem" I am seeking some info on.
I have had to extend the three mounting brackets on the TC. I need longer M10 bolts/studs to accommodate the stand off from the TC casing, and according to the guys at BMG, those are M10x1.25 thread pitch. Nobody in town has these longer bolts, but all advise me to have them made by engineering works. I need them around 65mm long. Last week I got a length of threaded rod that was supposedly what I needed, and I got all exited thinking the TC can go in this weekend. Turns out to be the incorrect thread pitch, after being told that it is 1.25.

Now if 1.25 pitch is such a pain to get hold of, I was wondering if it's not worth drilling these holes out, and tapping in a more common M12 thread.

Now my question/concern...
The casing is around 21-22mm thick at the mounts. Is there enough material left to provide the strength I need if I go out to 12mm holes? What pitch is common enough to get threaded rod or bolts over the counter.

I'm usually told that I over analyze everything, but the last thing I need is to split or crack the casing and loosing my TC.

David, M10 x 1.25 is not too uncommon, but you need to be shopping from specialist bolt suppliers.

I would recommend speaking to Reliable Bolt (Edenvale) or JKM Industrial Supplies (Randburg). Preety sure either will be able to help you, just not sure how much it will cost to actually get the parts to you.

I would not drill them out to standard M12, as the amount of material around the hole looks a bit marginal to me, and you want the fine thread, and going to M12 will mean you get an even coarser thread. In Alluminium, course threads are weak.

I might actually have some M10 x 1.25 bolts in my garage, but I am barefoot now, and only a fool walks barefoot in my garage, so will have to check later.
