Alternator - 4.2 diesel GQ

Looking for one of those please. Tried David Volschenk, no luck.

Quick search on eBay and seems the Nissan Navara diesel uses the very same one - could anyone confirm?

It looks like mine had an aftermarket Isuzu one on. It was undercharging - the sparky opened it up and said the spindle was on its way out and that there was a small short on the stator. Perhaps it could be refurbished, but I don't want to take chances with that considering it wasn't made for a Patrol - rather get a new one.

And I think the original had a 60 or 70A - would prefer a 90/100A one - but would take either.

Cheers

Isn't there supposed to be a vacuum pump on it?

Try Breno Parts. I managed to get a new 24V alternator for my safari for around R2.5k a couple of years ago.

Your alternator will have the vacuum pump on the back of the alternator. This makes it a little difficult to just replace with anything. Grant took his in and they upgraded it ( the original one ) to, I think 80 amp. Our 4.2 diesels have little to no electronics in them and any extra amps would be used to charge a second battery or run high powered spotlights or fridges. Post a photo of the alternator, and then lets see...

Thanks again chaps

Yes it has the vacuum pump. (will send pics shortly)

Pm'ed Christo.

Called Breno - they have the Hitachi aftermarket copy - 70A for R1969 ex VAT.

Said he could get the stator rewound to 90A for about R600-R700.

Also asked him about my battery - it's a 657A 66Ah (505A). The Battery centre's I went to recommended getting a bigger one, even 90Ah. But the chap at Breno said the 66Ah was more than enough even after I told him I had a winch, spots, etc.

So who's wrong? I'm guessing the Breno cat?

Let me ask you a question...... Isn't bigger better??.......hmmm enough said !!

Seriously though, I have a 90 Ah main battery. Piece of mind if I'm somewhere and need to charge my phone in the car for an hour or 2, or what about listening to the cricket on the radio for a few hours..... its very difficult to push start a 4.2 diesel with 22:1 compression ratio

It depends on your charging system and batteries.

If your second battery is a deep-cycle, you can't really push more than 25 Amps or so into it. Your main battery can only take say 40-45 A.

So, a 60A alterntor is enough, unless you get into a situation where you have flattened both batteries and need to charge them while simultaneously while also operating lights, air con etc.

There is however no disdvantage I know of in uprating, except for the cost.
