2004 3l patrol grx advice

Post by Leslieredgar »

Looking at 2004 3l grx patrol with a few extras. It has had turbo and injectors done. Ome lift, drawer system, front and rear offroad bumpers and ST MAX tyres.

Being sold for R185k

It says it's a 2004 3.0ddti grx wagon manual. Vin Jn1tesy61zo543562.
I'm looking for a reliable overland vehicle, bots, nam etc.

I like the idea of 3l due to lover fuel consumption.

But heard scary things about engin prior to 04.

Hi Leslie

If it is the CRD motor, then you shouldn't need to worry too much, that motor is a beast but the ZD30 motor had some serious issues that I'd be very concerned about.
Also see this topic and this topic.

The best option is always to ask someone who knows the vehicles well to come with you. In general the Patrols are rock solid and unless you see something obviously wrong (such as excessive rust or diff locks not engaging), they tend to be reliable.
The best person I am aware of in Cape town to assist you is Frans Fourie ( tour de Frans ), but I'm certain there will be others equally willing.

Oh, and I'm not too happy about that price either... I think you can do a lot better.
May the road be long.. and dirty.

I think you answered the question I had. It is the ZD30 so I think im going to stay away. Thanks very much. I think I will be patient. I want to do a few over land trips and I want to be 100% conformable about the reliability

2004 is right on the edge of the danger zone. Plus I think the price is way too high. I wouldn't pay over R120k for a 2004, unless it's a 4.8GL.
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.

2004 3Di GRX was exactly my hand-grenade model.

The diesel came out as a GRX (climate control, electric/leather seats and sunroof), until just prior to the face lift.
The face lift (early 2005 or perhaps late 2004) did not come with the GRX spec anymore, but with a smarter ECU that mostly prevented the hand-grenade (although I know fa few handgrenades in the early facelift models).

Unless the owner can prove he had driven with a mad man for most of those kms, I would not buy it.
The piston fatigue is progressive and will not be visible.
