Ian, thanks for letting me test drive your 4.5 auto. It is awesome, but...

I stopped at Grahams shop today and had a quick spin in the 4.8 auto. My life is forever changed! That is the one I want.

I've upped the budget to R150k, but I don't know if that is too optimistic for a clean and mechanically sound vehicle.

  If you remember I did say that to you :woo: In my opition the only other patrol that can compete with the 4.8 is the 4.2 diesel turbo charged but they are not easy to find! I think if you are going to spend R150K and you take your time I think you should be able to find a nice 4.8 for that money

I had a grey import 1995 4.2i GRX from the UK (speedo in miles per hour) with the 3 speed auto plus overdrive.

It was "most frustrating to drive" vehicle I ever had. It came with 30 inch wheels, those horrible 3 spoke 16" mags. The 30s (245/70 x 16) just looked waaaayyyy to small. Even my Terrano at the time ran on 31s. I removed the tyres and fitted second hand 32s (265/75 x 16s) just to try them, I then found a new set of 10 x 15j mags and fitted new 33 tyres.

At 120kph it would do 2,100 rpm in 3rd, and then drop to 1,900 rpm in OD. It could not maintain 120kph at 1,900 rpm, even on a level road, and for the love of me, I could not get it out of overdrive back into third. I had to pull the lever down to second and speed up, change to 3rd and into OD, just to repeat the process AGAIN! The 32s were slightly better but the same happened. The Patrol was only able to maintain speed if I travelled 140kph.

I tried towing my offroad trailer once, it was an absolute disaster, even the slightest incline meant going back to second and crawling up at 70 kph! The the flats I would have to tow at 140 kph, an accident waiting for a place to happen....

The vehicle had done 250 thousand miles and was smoking, so instead of overhauling the motor, I fitted a Lexus V8 with a 4 speed Lexus auto box, which I found a lot better. At least I could stick to the speed limit and fuel consumption on the open road improved from 5km/lt to 8.5km/lt with about double the power. Not long thereafter I retired and wanted to buy a newer vehicle, so I bought a Pathfinder.

Now I sat with 3 4x4s!! How rediculous! I started a 4x4 Touring business and found the Terrano the perfect vehicle for leading the convoys into Africa as it ran on 500ppm diesel. I could not use the Pathfinder as it needed 50ppm diesel. The Patrol was very big to use in the bush and it fuel consumption increased drastically offroad and in thick sand, so I sold the Patrol in 2014.

After driving manual vehicles with 5 speed and 6 speed gearboxes, I do not think I will even be happy or comfortable being limited to just 4 gear ratios offered on the Patrol Automatic. When I replaced my 1999 Terrano with a 2008 Patrol 3.0 Tdi in 2016, an auto box never even entered my mind, not that the diesel GX came in auto locally.

So like Peter, I am a confirmed manual gearbox man. The 7 speed auto box, like on the 3.0 V6 VX9 Pathfinder, will surely tempt me. Some years ago (2010 or 2011) I took a VX9 for a test drive in town, and can only say "WOW!!" But that may have been partially because of the lovely V6 engine. Acceleration was in the same league as the modern 'pocket rockets', and the box was super responsive.

Now that V6 diesel engine and that 7 speed auto box in a Patrol..........

It looks like it was advertised for R175k a few months ago. Currently it's advertised for R160k. I' m sure with some bargaining it will probably go for less. It didn't look at it myself but did speak to the seller. I think his name was Peter 0827765365

Sounds positively horrific. I suspect the 4.8 will fair a lot better. The 4.5 was nice... But I think it would drive me up the wall eventually. I can only imagine that 4.2.

Then I must admit, I have never owned an auto, I've just always wanted one. Perhaps my first auto will rapidly cure me of this delusion.
