Patrol search

Post by dieselfan »

Instead of separate threads, I'm just going to keep this one

It's a 98 4.2 with DL. 250k km for about R140k

I noticed however
- Oil leak on left front just above axle.
- Rev counter doesn't work (Apparently faulty pickup from alternator?)
- Car pulls strongly to the right when braking, in a jerk like fashion
- I couldn't get DL to engage? It just kept flashing
- Engine felt good and sounded great, freeflow n all...
- While driving the air bag and oil light were flashing.
- Harsh ride on dirt, I felt each stone (not rock, stone)
- Didn't wallow on the road.
- Dead battery
- Couple scratches and dings nothing major

Dealer reckons he can sort out the issues, are they major? Would you take it?

I drove over 600km round trip to check this car.

Hello Roy

Just confirming, this is a non-turbo 4.2 diesel, right?

Oil leak: dealer must sort before you take delivery.
Rev counter: same as above.
Brakes: need overhauling, and disks need skimming or replacing. Again, dealer should sort, but measure the disk thickness before you take delivery to make sure they have not been skimmed too far.
Diff lock: 80% chance it's the solenoid. dealer must sort.
Oil and airbag lights: this worries me. Both these are very expensive to fix if the lights are functioning correctly. But they are probably easy to gyppo. I would insist on seeing some type of proof of what action was taken to rectify.
harsh ride: does it have a suspension kit? Sounds like heavy-duty.
Dead battery: dealer must replace.

Problem is though, to fix all this is probably going to cost him a pretty packet if done properly, so make sure he is not gyppoing.
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.

Roy - get them to check the airbag abd etc as Peter says and send you the diag report , if you wish to get more info on that report send it of to me ill gladly assist you there
ALso they myst sort the oil leak and rev counter and im not sure but a lot of these revcounters worked of a magnetic pick up on the diesel pump and not the alternator , a quick look at the wiring setup will confirm but iether way it can become costly to repair so they must sort these problems for you

Hi Roy - This does look like a well looked after Patrol 98 -- BUT on Gumtree there are other 98 / 99 Patrols just on 100-K
Me thinks that for that extra 40 K the seller must deliver with all items you mentioned prepared to your satisfaction :mytwocents: :mytwocents: :mytwocents: [Thas SIX cents worth of opinions .. ]

Agree with Peter,

Would be very concered about the flashing oil light. Have oil pump tested, by dealer. Could be a sender unit failure.

Alot has been said on the different diesel 4.2 engines in all the trolls in summary see this link.

To be honest, my first question is why wasn;t these things sorted out in the first place?

I've been staring at this Patrol since it was placed on the forum:
http://patrol4x4.co.za/viewtopic.php?f=65&t=2622

Looks to me like a LOT better deal. If I had the cash avaialable, that baby would be in my driveway right now.

Only add some 10-15k to the price to replace that terrible rear.
May the road be long.. and dirty.
