Re: GQ 4.2 Diesel for sale - OLX
Hmmmmm.... Interesting....... I may be mistaken, but the GQ patrol TD42 motor was a silver top, as they were not imported by Nissan SA. Apparently there were a few TD42 GQ Patrols brought in by an independent dealer.
Looking at this motor, it looks like a black top TD42. The quickest and easiest way to diagnose if it is a silver or black top is to check the back of the alternator if it has the vacuum pump on it.
Something is bugging me though.... there is no decal saying if it is a ST or SGL-D on the rear or on the rear side panels below the rear side window, so possibly been resprayed. Also for what its worth the oil filler cap on the tappet cover is not the right one for the TD42.
Other than that it looks in pretty decent condition other than the brake peddle rubber..... which I think shoudn't be worn out like that after only 150 000Km

The real silver top engine only ran from 1989 - 1992 I think and interestingly enough not all of them actually had silver rocker covers.ricster wrote:it looks like a black top TD42. The vacuum pump did run from the alternator yes but so did some of the N/A TD42 black tops....so its impossible to tell without stripping the engine and checking the gudgeon pin sizes, piston shape and weight, precombustion chamber hole size.
Interesting fact is that the later GU factory turbo'd black top engines are stronger than the silver top motors......so if you can find one of those you are good to go

" The real silver top engine only ran from 1989 - 1992 "...... nope... Grants Patrol, now Dirks Patrol is a 96 Patrol silver top. Here in SA we only got the black tops from 1998 in the GU Patrol. Stefaansie's GQ also has a silver top if I'm not mistaken. You are correct that the silver top did not always have a silver rocker cover, but from all the times I've seen a GQ TD42 it will have the vacuum pump on the alternator.
I think you got this info from the Aussie sites, as they got a few versions of the TD42, where as we seemed to get a bit of a mishmash of TD42 engines in the GU models up till the end of 1999 when we officially switched over to the ZD30. I believe Nissan put what ever stock they had together to make up the batch of Patrols that came to SA. I would actually not be surprised if there was only one shipment made to SA from Nissan which was enough to fulfill the orders till end 1999 when the ZD30 came into effect.
