Hi
My parents want to do a trip trough Lesotho from the east. Will it be possible to do the 200km from Sani to Katse in a day? How is the road conditions? I have not done this road before. I heard the tared the road between Mokhotlong and Thaba-Tseka. Could someone confirm this? It will make the traveling much easier for them. They will be 2 vehicles. My experience of Lesotho is 15km/h average speed if you travel on gravel roads.
I will warn them about flash floods tough. A friend of mine was in Lesotho last weekend and they ran into trouble because of rivers coming down.
Cheers.

Hi Marnus
I think the flooding is a summer event.
So the risk of this will depend on the season they are travelling.

Re: Sani to Katse
Hi Marinus,
I did this route in December. It is achievable in 1 Day, but it is going to be a long day!
The road is not too bad, but is rockier than Sani Pass. There are a lot of roadwork’s (Chinese investments ), so you can expect lots of stop and starts.
The Road between Mokhotlong and Thaba-Tseka is a dirt road.
I would rather spend the night at St. James Lodge and then drive to Katse the next day. (I must add that when on Holiday I want to drive slowly and enjoy the scenery.)
Best Regards,
Johan

Re: Sani to Katse
I did it a couple of years ago and agree it is achievable in one day but don't underestimate the time it takes. If I remember it takes about 8 hours with not many stops, not too technical. Lesotho has a knack of eating up time.

Re: Sani to Katse
Last year the road from Sani Top to Mokhotlong was rougher than Sani Pass itself. It can eat up time as Andrew said so plan accordingly. We left Sani top after lunch and only manged to get to Mokhotlong by around 7ish that evening. The road condition changes constantly so it may be better now than 8 odd months ago.
