Jorrie I think that is probably correct, but IM(NS)HO, snow is a lot more dangerous than mud and water, particularly for people like me who don't know the stuff.
Jorrie wrote:The real point is that we (with exception of one couple who are seasoned overlanders) are relatively new to this environment and we would like it to be an enjoyable experience. We are therefore trying to make sure that we are proprely prepared, hence the early planning and my questions to this forum.
I am relatively new to this myself, my first proper overlanding trip having been to Botswana last year. Nobody in our party had ever overlanded before (although most of us are no strangers to the bush), and we went to places with almost no facilities, yet all were happy. I feel the best way of preparing is to go camping for a weekend a few times, at least you quickly learn what you need and what you don't. One person's camping list is useless to another, because we all do things differently.
However I firmly beleive that the attitude of all the people in the party is the main thing. With the correct attitude any trip to any place, no matter what equipment is used, will be fun and succesful.
Jorrie wrote:Much of the fun lies in the preparation, research, discussions and studying of the maps, books and other resources. We are already having a lot of fun and we have not even made the final desicion where we will end up going. In the meantime I am also working on the design of a drawer system, which must be completed and installed before April.
I agree that the modifications and preperations make up a large part of the fun. I feel a small sense of pity for the guys who drop their cars off at fitment centres and pick them up two weeks later, fully rigged, because they have missed all the fun. The same applies to a lesser extent to people who only go on catered trips with tour guides. They miss the fun of planning, but if the tour guide knows his stuff they will see and learn things that we might miss.
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.

Oom mac
