Why: Well, it’s really away from it all - no cell reception, no fences, no gates, no telephone lines, no power lines. I guess what also made a difference was that it was out of season, travelling in a small group and a great bunch of guys at that!
Who were we: John Murray and Ross Sephton (Nissan Patrol GU Y61) and Mallie Foulis and Dale Smit (Land Cruiser 80)
When: 5-19 September 2009 (15 days)
Distance: 6285 km
Route:

Overall Consumption: Patrol 4.8: 4.1 km/l, Cruiser: (Mallie come in)
Most memorable places: Marienfluss,
What irritated you: The community camp sites along the Kunene where the locals swamp you.
What did you enjoy most: Wild camping, sense of adventure, amazing geology, landscapes, animals in the real wild.
What would you skip next time: Ongongo, Beesvlakte
Where would you stay longer: Marienfluss (1 night), Puros (2 nights), Hoanib (2 nights), Hoarusib (2 nights)
Disappointment: Van Zyls – all about when you do it, it seems. There has been a lot of ‘road building’ since the last rains and it was not challenging (2-3 difficulty), BUT I can only image how hectic it’ll be during/after rain.
