Hi Peter,

Difficult one, but I will see if I can get more information on it.

Thanks Grant. Not serious though, I am way too far down the road to change anything major.

Right, brakes seem to be working correctly now. There is no snatching, braking is accomplished smoothly and in a 5-minute drive around the extended block, the temperature of the brake drums went up from 35 to 78 degrees C.

There is, I guess, one more test I should do, and that is to measure how long it takes to stop from a set speed without the trailer, and also with the trailer, both with and without brakes.

My problem was that in the VW drum mechanism (which I am using), the automatic adjustment mechanism is triggered by the hand-brake mechanism.

Which of course I am not using, so the automatic adjustment wasn't working. But I have gyppo'd it now, so problem solved.

The brake pipes are now securely mounted in (hopefully) well-protected areas:

This photo shows both the flexible section of the hose, and what the suspension looks like when fully-compressed:

And this is fully-extended:

And this gives some idea of the range of adjustability (in other words how uneven a campsite you can theoretically get level on:

Filled the tanks an took it down to Hennops on Saturday for a serious leg-stretch.

Of course, since there's no bodywork yet, it is still pretty light (around 400kg now), but i managed to do every single obstacle.

Unfortunately i also managed to do a little bit of damage, but i suppose that was the purpose of the exercise, to find any possible issues before it's too late.

Biggest issue is the steps at the back, which got bent quite badly.

So now while i wait for the materials to build the body, i have some other bits and bobs to keep me occupied!

I guess all the photos prove is how much flex the coupling has...

That looks like exactly what I need for the boat trailer. Would it work on an unbraked trailer?
