Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

I always liked the idea of an awning on the side of a car. Too many a time I wished for some shade or shelter from the rain when nothing was available.
From the first time I saw the Hannibal awning I liked the design. The price was a bit steep for me however. I discussed the idea with my brother and we decided to build one. We copied the basic design of the Hannibal with a few minor modifications.
I bought the canvas in Midrand, brought it back home and with my mothers help stitched it together. 2.4m x 2.4m. The size was dictated by the length of the roofrack. Cost - R300
Once the canvas was completed I went about and bought mildsteel square tubing 20mm x 20mm x 1.6mm x 12m. Cost - R150
Bought gate hinges at R70 for the two and 4 pieces of 100mm x 250mm x 2mm flatbar. - Cost R70
Scavenged my bothers garage and found a piece of 80mmx12mmx500mm flatbar to be welded to the hinges. - Cost - begging.
Bought a 2.5m x 42mm meranti curtain rod to use as the front bar and onto which the canvas will be rolled - R250
Got two pieces 41mm x 100mm stainless steel exhaust pipe from Powerflow in Parow to use as end caps on the rod. - Cost - Nice smile and a big thank you
Of to Britghts to buy 10 20mm x 8 mm stainless steel bolts with nylock nuts and two 125mm by 8mm grub screws. - Cost - R80
Last but not least bought 500ml NS4 some sealer for the rod and consumables at R120.
About 3 hours to stitch the canvas (Mom did the stitching, I did the holding and folding)
About 8 hours of welding the arms (Brother did the welding, I did the holding, clamping and burning.)
2 hours of painting, assembling and the end result:

Abri, you accesorise your troll very neatly.
I had the same awning on a Landy, advantage is you can actually move the car if the sun moves. My current Eazy Awn I cant, have to fold it up and move .I want to make the same again.
Tip , make one for the other side and add a propeller and you can FLY!!!

I made loops attached to 50mm webbing stitch about 300mm from the edge.
Used 10mm bungee cord looped through the loops and roofrack. Once the awning is up it is pulled tight and attached to the side of the roofrack. If you look closely you'll see where it is attached in the middle of the roofrack.

The bungee cord double up in holding the awning in place when rolled up.
