Would you mind ellaborating, Steve? The 300 has more non-streetnav functionality than the nüvi 500 (or any other nüvi for that matter), but which of these functions are regularly used in the 4x4 application? The one point that I can think of is that the Oregon has more powerful track log management capabilities.

To me the bottom line is that Garmin has cleverly positioned the street nav and trail nav machines apart so that you will have to buy one of each if you want the ultimate of everything. If you can have only one, then one has to decide where you will get most bang for the buck most of the time and live with the limitations that the unit has.

The Oregon has track logging functionality. In fact, it has quite powerful track management functionality. You can log, save and view multiple tracks or navigate along them. You also have some level of control over the track recording method (i.e. the density of the "breadcrumbs")

If I am not mistaken, the Oregon 300 comes with Garmap SA Streetmaps software and a USB cable, but without any kind of vehicle mount. An auto navigation kit is available (includes the vehicle suction cup mount and cigarette lighter adapter) for around R500 I would imagine.

Koos, me thinks me will follow your recommendations and start saving for a freezer instead of a GPS, so I will start my investigations between all various makes/models/sizes and open a new topic for comments/ideas/ no-goes/yes-pleases etc
