Which Garmin for Overlanding is the most cost effective

Post by jan.dup »

I had a Garmin Nuvi but it went missing (ie stolen) recently - I am looking for Garmin model that can be used on my overlanding trips. The Garmin Overlander looks very nice but is pricey and I don't need features like the messaging system etc as I already have a Satt phone. I use (paper)maps as my primary route source but on a couple of occasions the GPS alongside the maps spared me a lot of trouble and/or wasted time. A nice big screen would be nice as well.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I use the Garmin 276cx as well as a Montana 650.

Advantage of the 276cx is a bigger screen and with the buttons to the side you can still operate it while driving, even on gravel or uneven roads/surfaces.
Disadvantage of the 276cx is that it takes time to input co-ordinates as the screen is not a touch screen.

Advantage of the Montana 650 is the touch screen.
Disadvantage is the touch screen when driving, especially gravel roads/uneven surfaces. Even panning in and out on the map while driving is an issue.

The new Montana 700 series looks nice, bigger touch screen but also costly.

   See your reply only now - Only a hundred years later John !!!
I eventually decided to get the Overlander and it works like a charm - very happy - at the end of the day the extra spent was worth it.
