JG, you can relax. Engel fridge/freezers are actually manufactured by SAWAFUJI ELECTRIC CO., LTD. in Japan  .

Most other fridge/freezers use a rotary electric motor to drive the compressor, but Engel uses a non-rotating motor in which the armature oscillates under the influence of a varying magnetic field. Sawafuji call this the "swing motor". It has low start-up current under load compared to rotary motors, but seems to have a bit of a disadvantage in terms of steady-state power consumption. The bottom line is that the Engel fridges seem to be a little heavier on the electrical juice than (for instance) a comparable National Luna.

Daar het ek dit! Net toe ek dink ek's oulik toe wys Gerrit my 'n punt.

You are right Gerrit. I cannot recall that I heard of technical problems with the "swing" motor (not that I think there are not any...). A friend and myself compared the amp usage between my 40L engel and his 40L NL by testing the current at the same time in the same room with the exact load inside both starting from the same temperature. It was NOT SCIENTIFICALLY done but provided for lots of technical- and brand argument fun.

The NL indeed used less amps per running time (per minute) but the engel's effectivity seemed to be better than the NL. The engel tipped the NL with almost 1 hour less running time over a 10 hour testing period in an attempt to keep the fridge at the desired temp. Therefore, the total amp (cumilative) used by the engel during the 10 hours test were less than the NL.

Just spoke to the guys at National Luna and they say that the chances are small that the problem is the compressor - they believe it is the electronics and to replace that will cost about R2000-00.
