Sub tank into a 4.5 GU
Hi,
Has anyone ever tried putting in the sub tank from the 4.2 diesel into a 4.5 petrol body?
Do you think this will be the way to go. Or as we all know... Will it be more cost efficient to get one custom made and fitted considering the price the dealers will charge for the tank.
Maybe a Scrap yard? Try find one without a ding in it..
Firstly just need to know if its possible? To my understanding the two vehicles have the exact same under-body. Me feels like it should fit right in.

If you have an aftermarket tank made you should be able to fit in 20 l more fuel. No idea who made or fitted the one on mine but it holds 65 l with ease. As far as I know the Nissan ones hold 45 l.

Re: Sub tank into a 4.5 GU
Most people who do this, to my knowledge put in the bigger main tank.
The trisk is the fitment afterwards. This is critical to get right. Metal fatigue after lots of corrugated dirt road is not the after market tank's friend.
Make sure you get strong references for the fitment.
You can increase the 95 litres in the main to 135.
That makes more sense to me than enlarging the 40 litres (note, not 45) in the sub to 60 or 65.
Unless of course you do both.
Makes sure you eally want to do this, rather than just carrying jerry cans.
I noticed the other day that Kobus's new rear bumper can make him carry 3 jerry cans in the back.
The last thing you want is a dropped tank in the middle of "doer-and-gone".

Yes they are, except possibly for the exhaust pipe route which in all likelyhood in both cases rules out most of the left hand side of the undercarraige.Alex wrote:To my understanding the two vehicles have the exact same under-body. Me feels like it should fit right in.

Re: Sub tank into a 4.5 GU
My 4.5 GL GU has the 40l sub-tank in. Did yours not come with one or is the 4.2d bigger than the normal sub-tank? Otherwise the previous owner removed it.

Re: Sub tank into a 4.5 GU
Its for me a weight issue. I basically just want an extra 200kms range on fill up. try to avoid caring around an extra 120kg of fuel.
40l extra tank will do just fine. And you say that the guys are doing it.
Are the fittings already there standard on the 4.5 GU already, is it just a case of sourcing a fuel tank?

As I said, my GL got an extra tank in. If yours do not have on in, contact Dawid Volskenk ( +27 83 499 15 eight eight ). He will have a tank for you. He buys Patrols and strip them down for parts.
