Air bag replacement
Hi all.
I took my Patrol to Nissan in Port Shepstone today for that airbag recall. It took about 3 hour to do and afterwards the mechanic called me and showed me his Nissan diagnostic device could not find the EU. He asked me if it had been chipped as that would cause the problem but I dont know if it has been. Is there anyway to tell, something that is obvious. I know the chap I bought it from did not chip it and we cant get hold of the owner before him. There is nothing on the car either to say it has. I also wondered if the Mad Dog installation might cause that problem. I have successfully read the codes manually from the plug under the steering wheel so think that the connection there is ok.
Any thoughts??

Re: Air bag replacement
I know nothing about the chips etc, but I would assume that one could simply do a visual check.... but again, never seen one....

Re: Air bag replacement
Thanks Cedric. Yes I have never seen one either but was hoping someone on the forum who has a chip and has had their air bag replaced would have replied if they had experienced something similar. Thats assuming though that it was tested with the Nissan Consult thingy.

Re: Air bag replacement
I'm sure someone will reply soon.
Maybe change the subject title a bit to say something about "ECU Chip interfering with Airbag light" or something like that as there are quite a few Airbag replacement type posts already on and people may just skip over it.

Re: Air bag replacement
That doesn't make sense. He should be able to find the ECU or pick it up regardless of a chip on the car. The chip would be a piggy back chip feeding bogus signals to the ECU so it doesn't error while managing the engine, but from a diagnostic perspective they should be able to pick it up. I love how the default question for any problem is, "did you chip it."

Re: Air bag replacement
Hi Paul, what you say makes sense otherwise Chipping would prevent future diagnostics of every chipped Patrol. Its the first time I had ever been asked that question and so ran straight to the forum for answers. I still wonder though if the wiring in of the Mad Man would affect the connection to the ECU, however that too would have thrown up a red flag with the forum.
Thank you
Thank you

Re: Air bag replacement
I can't see that the madman could affect the ECU in any way, as the madman installation is entirely separate from the ECU.

Re: Air bag replacement
Thanks Peter. Brian from Mad Man is going to send down a Boost gauge for the unit, when they arrive, and I will get the chap in Durban who does the installation to check it afterwards with his tester and report back on this post with the findings.

Re: Air bag replacement
Like Peter said, the Madman is completely separate from the ECU. It wouldnt have any effect on whether the ECU could be read or not.
