Alex, I have done quite a lot of research on this, and for a second battery set-up I have gone with a lead-crystal - as Tinus suggests. Tests I have done have showed that this is a superior battery and far better than other deepcycle batts. Only problem is price - probably 50% more than other deepcycles. But ultimately the extra cycles and life you should get will be double any other battery in my view - see this on youtube :

There are a couple of videos - guy who made these did exhastive test on lead acid and lead crystal, and the results are impressive.

I bought one of these silver batteries at Midas in 2004 -- and had to replace it last month .. and as most you know - I am off into Bundu on Outreaches about 6 times per year [some more, some less] And it powered the 55 litre WAECO and evenings the Jesus film [DVD player / Data Projector + Sound system] and the odd light And all that through the inverter.

Now have a "generic" VARTA [other name, same factory ] @R1200 :woo: .. OH .. it is 115 A H

I've decided on the Varta G7 (650) 95AH as my new crank battery - got prices in Centurion ranging from R1770 to R2350.
Best price is the Battery place on Botha Laan in Lyttelton.

Thanks Chris.

With the fuel that battery will cost me close to R8000  (I'm going to have a look what my local battery centre has in stock)
