in the ilustration , you can actually see the holes in the shroud, in fact it is PARTITIONED !!! see first pic above.

and the newer TB45E's - took some pics today at the dealer and will post on flickr.... feel free to peek at the other flickr patrol pics...

and the newerTB45E patrols have a deeper shroud wich covers 100% of the maller radiator...

i am convinced that hot countries have a Service Bulletin for this 1998 model.....
why would they change the size of the radiator
(now if it actually holds less water - that i cant say - it may me longer length ways.

Looking at those pictures, I think the narrow radiator is much taller. It also has "windows", but this time underneath the fan.

Is your problem only occurring when you are crawling?

Reason I ask is, on for example VW products, they used to have windows like that, but with insertion rubber sheets hung from the top, on the engine bay side of the cowling. What happens is that when you are crawling, then the fan sucks air through the windows instead of through the radiator, but when you move faster, the speed of the car forces air through the radiator and the fan becomes less important.

Perhaps it is worth trying something like that? Some cardboard and duct tape should soon tell you whether it will help?

I had a overheating problem on my Patrol 2000 4.5 GRX. Especially in the summer with the aircon on.

I changed the viscous coupling and all problems solved. Now I can hear the fan is working when driving hard and sometimes when crawling in the city.

The viscous that I replaced was bought in the UAE, Abu Dhabi (R800)

All,
RE: Nissan Patrol Technical Bulletins? Reduce air intake temp/density Older TB45E

I have now found the 6 year problem with my 1998 Nissan Patrol SGLE (GU) TB45E in Y61

I am convinced that as result of a known overheating problem (read too hot intake air / low air density) Nissan has issued a Technical Bulletin.!!!! (they changed later model TB45E radiator size...)
the 1998 T45E / Y61 configuration has a large / long Radiator. I have now seen a newer TB45E (guess 2006) and everyting looks identical motor airfilter etc BUT, the Radiator is smaller (shorter)
Once the engine is warm, and standing in traffic or moving slowly, air is sucked thru the left side of the LONG radiator and blown straight onto the airintake (see link) - the pipe /object between wheel well to airfilter housing
http://www.flickr.com/photos/84057878@N ... hotostream
The temperature at airfilter entry point is something above 70 degrees C (digital thermometer i have only shows up to 70degrees C) http://www.flickr.com/photos/84057878@N ... hotostream
(this temp goes up BEFORE engine temp goes up - which i can see here... on ECU..
http://www.flickr.com/photos/84057878@N ... otostream/
So im working on insulating this object / pipe. - going to visit the Building AC contractors.....

Now - i have seen a later model Nissan Patrol TB45E Y61 (2006) and the Radiator is shortened so the Pipe is NOT in the (hot) airpath !!!!!

Where can i find the ****** Nissan Patrol Technical Bulletins? ********
in 2003 the dealer changed the Radiator as he said that what "solves the problem" now perhaps they did not read a technical bulletin properley - and the part number of the radiator changed!!!!!
Question - will the shortened Radiator fit into a 1998 Y61?

New TB45E

My older TB45E with long radiator...

I believe that if anyone is having heating issues when carling or in traffic - review the intake temperature...... and why its getting hot - a snorkel will not solve the problem in very hot countries - my guess only in Kuruman / Hottazhell northern cape will this exist....
Summer ambient temperature is 46 degrees C in the shade.
or i will move the airintake to the right hand side of the motor (right when sitting in vehicle)

Thx in advance - I knew years ago that they were jerking around - now to find a professional company here to check if the replaced cylinder head REALLy was Cracked - i think not......

I cannot understand why in this modern age - we take heat out of the engine and then blow that heat back over the engine!!!!!

Regards

RE: It almost sounds from what you are saying that you have the shroud for the short radiator instead of the one for the radiator you have in the car?

Yes,,, but so does every one that I have seen (7 ?) - so i believe this is probably for cold countries - i would LOVE to see a NSB / TSB

Peter thanks,

I was certainly thinking of isoltaing the whole section of the Filter housing - big tin can - and the air intake pipe....
great tip on the cardboard... or maybe some rubber - like the old mud curtains i just threw out - will go now and retreive...... done - will recycle tomorrow...

Summers almost here and the issue starts again.
Mods made in the Arabian winter.
Moved radiator top end 1 inch closer to motor - now fan blades entirely inside cowling.
Removed bottom deflector from Radiator cowling - hoping air will be forced downward.
Photos will be added later.

Last resort will be a temp fix of adding a cool air pipe into duct just before the Airfilter housing. (now that I know how to remove the dash...
I contemplated a changing the aircooler to other side but that is way too complicated - this is soon to be a second car.....
I have access to a Thermal camera so will be able to see temp hot spots..
I just cant work out why the area around the fuel evap gets so hot you cant touch it in Summer.... anormally high... and this raises the airintake temp sucked from the fender

double checked against others all these have a short shroud, and the fan is not depp into the shroud - well that was until i moved the radiator ....... lets see if that changed the throw of the hot air - can only tell when ambient temp goes over 45 degrees C - until then its just great engine temp staying between 80 and 84....

finally had to replace this engine.
Was replaced with used unit from Japan (Who knows)
But the engine overheating is exactly the same as the old one. no different....
So engine and all components replaced, radiator, heater bypassed, and radiator changed many times.... both fans functioning...
So do I start looking at the AC radiator that it just generates excessive heat? or is this a backpressure thing?
Or is it back to the original thought of Hot air causing overheating....
But will manage as I managed it in the past ...increased engine revs and temp comes down. - also popping the hood helps.

On open road .. it does not overheat.
