Alternative to 265/70/16 Tyres, Please??

Post by petri oosthuizen »

Hi Guys

I'm looking at a higher tyre, it can even be a tad narrower. Current size is 265/70 16. The Trol has its original steelies, I'd just like something higher, I see there's plenty space left in the wheelarches, so Im 99% sure higher tyres wont rub etc etc.

I also want my RPM a bit lower in 5th at highway speeds.

What alternative size would work here??

I dont want wider tyres, just higher - I sort of want the "original" look on those steelies.

THANKS

Guys sorry for all the stupid questions.

How would a 285/75/16 differ to a 255/85/16??

Which one is higher, and by how much??

THANKS

The 285 is taller.

Its basically a 33" its a very good all around good match for the patrol.

Personally I prefer the 255/85R16.

However, the choice of brands available in that size is extremely limited, and I doubt it really makes much difference anywhere except in heavily rutted thick sand.

Am currently running Dunlop muds in 255/85, and have been very happy with them, but they do wear out pretty quickly, so rand/km I doubt they are all that much cheaper than the more expensive brands. However, mine are now probably 25-30% from their end and they are the only set of tires I have not had punctures with yet.

285/75's will not rub on a standard GU. They may rub on the inside of the rear arches if the vehicle has been modified to maximize suspension travel but without raising it and extending the bump stops. Probably not territory you are likely to venture into.

Thanks Peter and others, will then most probably go for the 285's.....didn't really want to go that wide, but something like a 235 will really look "lost" in those wheel arches I think.
I noticed choices are really limited in the 255 size...…..

The 285s are quite a bit wider, but personally I think theyre the perfect fit. Below is a photo of the 285s on the 4.8 on the left, and the 265s on the diesel on the right. Not a great photo, but if you zoom in you can get an idea of the width difference.

Guys, just to confirm, will the 285's rub on the standard GU, no spacers etc etc needed??

And the 255/85's??

THANKS
