Post by roelf prinsloo »

Hi Roelf,

I have had two sets of BFG KM2 on my Patrol 4.2D, first set lasted 105 000km, second set lasted 98 000km. I decided to try something new just for fun, now running Cooper STT Pro, currently have about 30 000km on them and doing well. Hard to say if they'll make it all the way to 100 000km, i doubt it, but so far looking ok.

If anybody is giving a 10-year guarantee on tires they have made amazing strides in improving the compounds they are using.

Conventional wisdom has it that tires should be replaced after 5 years of use or 7 years since manufacture, whichever comes first. In fact I am under the impression that this mandatory in some countries...

I have certainly seen significant increases in tire damage on all the 4x4 tires I have owned as they get older. By 7 years after manufacture, they were all pretty useless. But because they last so long, there is a significant time period involved in which improvements can be made.
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.

"The warranty is limited to 10 years from date of manufacture."

This is from the Coopers website....

I struggle with this 5 year tire life, my previous set of Coopers was 10 years when I took them off, they still has more than half+ thread left but still looked in perfect condition and I was not experiencing anny problems with cracks/chipping or punctures.

My current Hankooks is also past the 5 year mark (7 or 8 years) and thread is still very good and also no problems with cracks/chipping or punctures. So do I now just replace because its older than 5 years?

Spoke to my insurance once and they indicated as long as the tire does not looked cracked and thread is fine they are happy, last year when I had the insurance claim the "evaluator" came out and looked at my vehicle and took pictures. He only looked at the state of the tyre and the thread did not look at the date of manufacturing.

So to spend 10K plus for new rubber.... I dont have it and dont plan on spending it at this moment

Coopers apparently offer a 60 000km guarantee with their tyres, on condition that you rotate and balance every 5000km i think. So if you go this route, make sure you get them from a tyre shop close to your house.
